Re: Looking for GC

there are many places for front end noise to happen. just wanted to add.... hands on is much better than listening to noises you can t hear. hope that helps. even calipers can make pop sounds.

Re: Looking for GC

The winter weather tore our roads up bad this year (we live in the country). You know that classic clunk noise shocks make when the upper rubber bushing goes bad...that's what we have when we're on uneven pavement. When I bought the car, indeed the rubbers were bad, but new shocks did nothing to lessen the noise. The lower control arm bushings were not bad, but I replaced them anyway & again no change. On smooth pavement the car is really quiet.

You know that classic clunk noise you get from front shocks when the upper rubber bushings are bad....that's what we have.....although new shocks did not make any difference. On smooth pavement, the car is very quiet, but we live in the country & the roads are very ruff due to the winter weather busting them up. I replaced the front lower control arms (the old ones were not bad) before I knew what I was doing, but that didn't make any difference either.

Re: Looking for GC

Sorry for the double post, thought I lost the first one.

The track bar seems solid....I did have to replace the short tie rod end when we got it, but everything else seems tight. We did have some wobble too, but new tires made that go away. Is there a particular way that the track bar has to be manipulated to reveal if it's got slack in it?

Re: Looking for GC

on zj an wj. the track bar. the holes get reamed out. the metal bushing can pop in and out slightly where the bushing mounts to the body bracket and to the axle. since you have the body noise, i'd look closely to the body side. also, while under the vehicle. in park of course with e brake on. have somebody turn fully left and fully right. look fore movement or flex on the mount plate and where the bushing mounts to the plate. you probably wont get the pop, but the track bar takes a lot of stress and needs to stay rigid. track bar is what keeps the axle on center while jeep turns. if you see flex/movement, you may want to take it apart and look/measure hole/bushing. look for broken welds on the mounting plate. look closely. if memory serves, zj is a bolt on, wj is a weld on. sometimes the failure is where the plate mounts to the body rail.

it doesn't take much failure to make a loud noise. i am suprised you have no evidence of death wobble. however, the dampener will take the mild shimmy out. until it fails then you get the true affect of the DW from track bar wiggle.

hope this helps. let me know.
