Looking for GC

Anyone know of any real bargains on a 99 - 04 grand cherokee in the mid-west? We'd like to find one with fewer miles. Looking 300 mile circle around Evansville, Indiana.
thanks,
Mike S

Re: Looking for GC

Good luck...I just don't get it with the WJ's. They are ALL over the board on price for comparable mileage. I see them going for $10k with over 100k miles, and I see them for $5k with over 100k miles. Crazy.

Search private sellers...that's probably your best bet. Another good place to look if you're handy is daveysjeeps.com. He sells repairables.

Re: Looking for GC

Agree on the wild swings on pricing. It seems 5 to 10 grand, regardless of mileage, seems to be the spread. It also seems the bulk of vehicles I'm finding advertised are in the north or northeast....not many in the lower mid-west or south.

Re: Looking for GC

That site I posted is for a guy here in OH that gets most of his repairables from the south. Some aren't really in need of much repair at all. A bumper here or a quarter panel there, and you can afford to do that when you're only paying $2-3k for a running vehicle. He's got some XJ Cherokees too. I have to stay away from the site....I've been too close to picking up an XJ for a project too many times. Miss my 98. That thing was a friggin tank.

Re: Looking for GC

The only thing I can tell you is here in upstate NY there are several dealer who buy them from the auction in Harrisburg PA and sell them reasonable. I bought my 2000 Laredo 4 years ago for $4200 with 125K on it. It's a base model with power nothing and a 4.0. It was immaculate and had records.

Re: Looking for GC

I've just missed out on 2 different jeeps this week. Both were 2002 & had less than 70K miles & were priced less than 6500. I couldn't take off work due to being short handed this week & they got sold before I could get to them.

Guess the search continues.....

Re: Looking for GC

i buy them with cracked heads and fix them. heck i could put you in a 99-02 in great shape for under 5k. just got my buddy one with a few minor problems for 1500. low mileage is hard to do, however, you can service the high mileage parts. i am in illinois just east of st. louis. and yes, you have to act really fast to get a good deal.

Re: Looking for GC

I'm 2 hours east of St.Louis not too far north of I 64, near Fairfield. There's one at a dealership in Quincy that I'm going to call about today....we'll see.

Ya, lots of hi milers out there at low prices but finding the Lo mileage in a color that I want (red or blue) is making it more of a challenge.

Re: Looking for GC

If your into rebuilding these things, how do you deal with the clunking from the suspension? I replaced the front lower control arms but it didn't help at all on the front end.

Re: Looking for GC

look into the track bar where it mounts to the body. if your lucky, its in the swaybar and/or swaybar links. look for polishing/drifting on the sway bar bushings. then load and unload the sway bar links. however, its probably in the track bar. do or did you ever have the signs of the dreaded death wobble??
if so, did a new steering dampener make it go away??
