Smile Looking into Getting a WJ

I am interesting in getting a WJ as a second car. I have always loved GCs and would love to get a WK2 but I already own a 2012 Liberty. The GC is my favorite Jeep and I have always liked the WJ body style and they are inexpensive. I am wondering which model I should get? (Laredo, Special Edition, Freedom Edition, Columbia Edition, Limited, or Overland). I am also wondering what engine would you guys recomend? (4.0 I6 or 4.7L V8). I am also wondering what problems are associated with the WJ and how long they should last. Another question I have is, how much should I expect to pay for a used WJ in decent condition?

Lots of questions there...
Buy the one that has the features you like...and most importantly can find.
There is a thread called something like 32 WJ problems and how to fix them
The 4.0 is a great motor but so is the 4.7...
A WJ is a GC from 1999-2004 so couple that with trim level,mileage,condition,and location and you will see that price will be all over the place... in my area 2001-2002 limiteds with 125,000 run $6,000-$8,000

Think Outside !- No Box Required.

Re: Looking into Getting a WJ

I would like it to have leather, 4x4, and the V8. I like the Special Edition, Limited, Overland, and the Columbia Edition. I do not mind the Laredo but I am not a big fan of the lower body cladding. Finding one should not be a huge challenge for me because I live in Michigan and it is easy to find used SUVs. Thanks for your help

Re: Looking into Getting a WJ

I love my Limited...and if you can get into the High Output V8, you'll be glad you did. When I was shopping, I was looking for the Limited, Overland, Freedom Edition, Columbia Edition. I wanted leather too, so I ended up narrowing my search to the Limited and Overlands. The HO adds quite a bit of extra punch under the hood, so if you can find one for a reasonable price, I'd suggest you go in that direction. The 6 is legendary, we all know that, but for the money, the V8 is actually better on fuel and makes this vehicle a lot more fun to drive. 2004 got the front-end refresh and is the last year the WJ was made...another reason I went with an 04 Limited.

What kind of mileage are you shopping for?

Typical issues inlcude AC blend door problems, although this seems to happen less often in the 04 model. Manifold bolts like to break near the firewall (ask me how I know), rear ball joint at upper a-arm likes to fail...but all in all, I haven't had problems with mine. It's probably been the most trouble-free of any vehicle I've owned, and I've owned a 4.0L Cherokee, and a 4.0L Wrangler before this.

Re: Looking into Getting a WJ

I am looking for a WJ with under or around 100k miles. I do not want too high of miles. The WJ will not be a daily driver because I have a 2012 Liberty. I want a WJ thats in good condition also.

Re: Looking into Getting a WJ

I would imagine that you can get into a nice 04 with that kind of mileage at about $5-6k depending on options/condition. Lower if you're willing to make some repairs or can find one privately. Since it's a "want" and not a "need", I'd really shop for the private seller. Dealers can suck it.

I'm not a big fan of dealers too. I was planning on finding one on craigslist or ebay in my area and looking

Re: Looking into Getting a WJ

I've had a lot of good luck buying and selling privately on Autotrader and Cars.com. I sold my Mustang, Wrangler, Cherokee, and the wife's WK all on Autotrader within a month or so of listing them. I found my WJ on Cars.com...private seller.

Re: Looking into Getting a WJ

Good choise, but probably im a little bit biased.
Which model depends completely on your taste or style. I would go for a 2004, it already has the restyled front area and it has already all the upgrades the previous models didnt have.
I would go for a 4.7 or 4.7 HO, because its coupled to the more modern 5 speed transmission. Look for a Quadra Drive if you want to really offroad it, this one can send all the torque to one wheel only if the other 3 are just spinning around.
Blend doors are quite common to break on WJs with the AZC (automatic zone control) airco system, eventhough it seems that the 2004 models have the upgraded doors already and are less prone to break.
These jeeps are very good and can give you years of fun, but it all depends on how the previous owner has maintained it. If all oils and fluid changes where done in time, it should serve you for quite some time still. (but this is valid for any type of vehicle)

Re: Looking into Getting a WJ

I found my Columbia Edition on Autotrader at a mom & pop dealer.

I would also suggest going for the 4.7HO. The power difference is very noticeable and it makes for a fun roadtrip.

Re: Looking into Getting a WJ

I'm in Florida, that being said about two months ago I picked up an 04 freedom edition with the 4.7 H.O. I paid about 9500 but it only had 85k on the clock over all I absolutely love this wj. I couldn't be more pleased.

So is the leather package different for the V8 models than the I6 models? My buddy has a WJ Laredo w/ the I6 and it came with leather.

You must have been lucky. Myself and 3 friends have WJs and they have been nothing but problems. Mine has 127k miles (03 Laredo, I6, 50k has been 90% highway), buddies has 180k (01 Laredo, I6, full options including leather), and other buddy has 90k (04 Limited, V8). They have been maintenance NIGHTMARES.

I only have the maintenance log on mine but my buddies are also always fixing something. Here's what has happened to mine since I bought it at 76k miles (list does not include what I consider standard maintenance like plugs, brakes, and oil change).
* Outer tie rod ends - 79k miles
* Upper and lower ball joints - 79k miles
* New passenger brake caliper because old one froze - 81k miles
* New Battery - 85k miles
* New front wheel bearings (both sides) - 86k miles
* New coil rail - 95k miles
* New rear axle bearings and seals - 112k miles
* New crank position sensor - 125k miles
* New radiator - 127k miles

I still have several things that need replaced right now but I haven't gotten around to them. My front pinion seal is leaking and there's at least one bad bushing up front because I can hear it pop. Look at that list of fairly major things wrong with a vehicle that only has 127k EASY miles on it (I haven't gone 17k miles w/out something being fixed ). If one wasn't mechanically inclined and had to take it to the shop for every one of those issues, I would have repair costs almost equal to the vehicle cost.

At only 127k miles, this vehicle has been a maintenance nightmare (along with my 2 buddies vehicles). What do they say JEEP stands for....Just Empty Every Pocket....and that true about Jeeps. Don't get me wrong, I still love the vehicle. It's more of a love/hate relationship right now. My wife suggested I sell it and get something else, but I shot that down quickly. Bottom line is that I do like the vehicle, but it is on the BOTTOM of the list of vehicles in terms of maintenance from vehicles from many companies (and that list includes some shitty vehicles like a Cavalier and an Escort).

Sorry for the mini-rant. I just feel it's "false advertising" every time someone tries to pass a Jeep off as low maintenance. Sure there are some lucky ones out there, but most are not low maintenance. But they are still great vehicles.
