Looks like I'll need valve seals...

Ugh, Jeep is smoking like a bitch once I give it gas after sitting at a stoplight for a bit/idling. Probably just the valve seals, which I can do without taking the heads off. If it's the valve guides, I'd have to remove the heads. Removing heads= ARP's, new gaskets, built/ported heads, cams, tune, 08+ intake manifold, bigger throttle body, exhaust. Might as well replace all the old crap with brand new, better stuff.

More than likely going to build a motor by the end of the year. There goes the money I was going to save to go back to school.

HOs pop up from time to time in the yards.

Not a bad idea. I'll start looking for that, too. Probably cheaper to do an HO swap than a head build.

Re: Looks like I'll need valve seals...

Hmmm... really considering only the valve seals, and doing an HO cam/spring swap at the same time. $500 for the cams, springs, and wedge tool at airram.com. $30 for the valve seals. Anyone ever use the compressed air through the spark plug hole to replace the valve seals? If I end up doing this, I'll make a good write up with lots of pictures since no one's done that yet.

I did it once about 25 years or so ago on a Ford 302 and it worked for me but you need some serious air pressure and hope your valves aren't too carboned up. If you drop a valve ya got to pull the head anyway so be careful.

Re: Looks like I'll need valve seals...

ultimately, if you drop a valve using air you should be at top dead center compresson on that cylinder (so that the cylinder actually builds pressure) I have pondered before how far the valve will drop before it hits the piston and I honestly... again considering the piston is at TDC... dont think that it would pose too big of an issue. the problem will lie in trying to get the valve to stay up to install the keepers, or if the engine rolls over and allows the valve to drop in.

just be careful and take your time, if the wedge gets pulled out or carelessly installed, and when you remove the cam gear it allows the tensioner to expand beyond a point it wont go back in unless you pull the timing cover, and reset the tensioner.

Re: Looks like I'll need valve seals...

143k.

Dumped in a half a bottle of lucas oil stabilizer after reading suggestions on j-f, seems to have worked for short term. I'll probably add the rest after a little bit. I'm going to keep an eye on it. I definitely need to replace them, just buying some time. I've heard of using rope down the spark plug hole with the piston at TDC, which I'll probably end up doing. Give m a month or two to save for he seals, HO cams and springs, and I'll have a write up on how to do it.

Re: Looks like I'll need valve seals...

The rope trick actually works. You put a bunch of thin rope in the spark plug hole and then bring the piston up.It's only rope so it doesn't hurt anything.

Is your jeep that bad that you need such expensive tools to keep it working?
