Hello all! I am new to a WJ, and new to Jeep Garage. After reading forums over past couple months, i decided to join.
So old guys, please help by letting me pick your brain. 2000 4.7 WJ. the 247 was bad, so I swapped a 242J into it. Swapped rear shaft too.
After the swap, it would grind terribly and not shift into 4x4. Turns out, a previous owner had replaced the driver wheel bearing/hub and driver axle shaft. But when they replaced the axle shaft, they used the one for Quadra-Drive, so it was an inch and a half too short. That was an easy fix, so took it on a road trip.
Seemed good until I hit 67mph. Then What i get is a very low frequency WWWWWUHWWWWW.....WWWWWWUHWWWWWW, ( almost like a really loud garbage truck outside your house). It has a wave frequency, it fades in and out about every 4 seconds. Also, a grinding sound has now appeared. Almost sounds like brakes grinding. I can't seem to isolate if it comes from a particular side. Cracked the front diff open, and oil is clean, no metal, and no noise when spinning it by hand.
So, what I ask of my new community is to throw ideas, similar stories, spitballs, fixes etc. at me.
I have also repaired the blend doors for heat, and can help others with that too!

Thanks,
Aaron

Welcome to the garage Aaron.
Did you already try to drive without the front propshaft? It would unload the T case front output and the front differential. If the noise continues the same, i would expect a wheel bearing.
