Oil filter leak 4.7 HO

I have a 2004 Grand Cherokee with 89,000 miles bought new in 2003 with a 4.7 HO. I've had a persistent but intermittent minor oil lead around the oil filter area for years. Some oil changes had leaks and some did not. The leak was minor but very annoying. I finally had enough and with access to a lift, thought I would try and find the source of the leak. I took the oil filter off and the area above the filter was clean. I thought it might have been the sending unit. Then I put red grease on the filter gasket and spun it on. The attached photo shows the problem. The gasket does not mate with the surface completely.

Has anyone else seen an issue where the filter gasket does not seal correctly around the mating surface? I can't see any damage and think it had to be cast that way from the factory. Or, the threaded insert was drilled off center. I've looked at other filters and the Mopar one for this engine has the same gasket diameter as all the rest.

I got a new filter, put some Permatex red RTV on the gasket and put the filter in place. I'll let you know if that stops the leak for now. I'm going to be stuck changing my own oil from now on.

Re: Oil filter leak 4.7 HO

Interesting find. My 2004 appears to be leaking at the filter but I have recently switched brands of filters. FWIW - there are 3 filters that use the same base and thread but are different lengths and hold more oil. I have not had a problem with the Napa Gold/Wix filters I have used for the past 4 years on it.

Re: Oil filter leak 4.7 HO

I used K&N oil filters on mine the entire time I owned it...I thought I had the same issue. Turned out it was a front timing cover leak. It was barely there, but enough to lay a drop or two of oil on my very white K&N filter. Once the cover came off and was re-sealed, the issue cleared up....something to look at. The rubber o-ring on the oil filter is thick enough to make up for what appears to be a very minor imperfection in mating surfaces. I always installed mine on the tighter side...having a nut welded on the end makes that a lot easier to manage.

Re: Oil filter leak 4.7 HO

Thanks, now I know I'm not alone with this issue. I'll get it up on the ramp again this weekend and take a good look. No drops of oil on the floor so far. Filter was not cross threaded.
