Getting ready to replace the oil pump while the pan is off, (rusted through ) and I don't know how to install the pickup tube and screen to the pump. Should I use some kind of sealer or is it a dry fit ?
There is a tool made to make this install easier. The part number is MCAT-62. I finally broke down and bought one since I do build engines often. You can do the install with vise grips and wrapping something around the tube and then clamping the vise grips onto that to keep it from digging into the tube and i always put red threadlocker on it and knock it in there. It's kinda awkward to do and I usually put the pump in a vise and knock it in that way. Once it starts into the pump it goes pretty good from there. It has that tab that the pump retaining bolt goes through and if it is off a little bit usually the tube will still turn once it's in the pump if you have to move it a little bit.
