Overfilled Tranny !!

Hi All,
I think I've overfilled the transmission as I topped it up when in park but when in neutral the reading is higher.
I've got to go out of the country for a week and won't have time to take any out and the wife will be driving it.
Can any serious harm happen or will the breather take care of it?
There's no issues with the gear changes it's just a bit high reading on the dipstick.

..you really have to follow the manual for checking tranny oil levels. It varies according to temperature and position of the shifter quite a bit
If its only a "bit" to much, i won´t care, however, if you could barely clase the filler plug I would drain some of it.

..just my personal view, so good luck!

I've argued with people about this before. People think that FSM is gospel. I've found quite a few errors in that thing over the years and this is one of them. My thoughts on it are this: If you want to overfill your trans do what the FSM says. If you want to do it right do what the dipstick says. It came with your Jeep. I've been in the same situation as you and the only easy way to get some fluid out is to buy one of those fluid transfer suction pumps from your local parts store. Can you run it? I'd be a little nervous. They say over full is as bad as too low.

When the tranny is really overfilled, the gear train/clutchpacks will be partly in the fluid and will cause foaming of the fluid. This fluid full of foam (air) will not properly apply the clutches, because the air is easy to compress. So this can cause slipping clutches and other shift problems and raise the fluid (foam) level even more.
There are a lot of discussions on jeep and dodge forums regarding which way to check the fluid level. Eventhough there is a little difference in level between the two, both methods are used by many people and i have never heard of any problems on transmission behaviour from any of this methods. You really have to fill it well above the full hot mark in Park before it will give any problems.
