Did NHTSA reach some magical number that triggered this call for action?

I think our national bridge infrastructure is in more dire need of a recall IMO.
Good call...I completely agree. I've seen potholes that are more dangerous. MUCH more dangerous.

Re: Recall Rejected

This wole thing was probaby triggered by family members of the people who were killed in these type of accidents.

If the only time this happened was when the vehicle was lifted I don't think this would be an issue as when you lift a vehicle you assume the risk of changing the safety measurements for the vehicle. This more happened due to bone-stock vehicles being involved I believe.

Re: Recall Rejected

Recall doesn't make sense to me, I have a 1/4' skid over the backside of mine though, before I switched bumpers that thing was looking like a meatball on the back of my lifted WJ.
Lets just hope if recall goes through they come up with a workable fix. I'd end up with a pretty expensive toy if they get taken off the roads.

2007 Jeep Liberty is not a decade old. I actually don't think a 6 year old vehicle is terribly old.

Personally, I would like more information on what makes this design different from other vehicle's designs. What exactly makes it more dangerous and in need of a recall? With so many of these vehicles on the road, why hasn't this been brought to anyone's attention before now?

Right now, I wish our gas was that "cheap". We're sitting at $4.25 in South Central Indiana.

I remember it was a year ago that this issue was beginning to be looked into heavily and researched and it was discussed here, I'm sure a quick search would dig up those threads.

The issue from what I remember is that the tank bends/breaks during an accident and a spark happens and the fuel/fuel tank ignites.

Re: Recall Rejected

They can recall just so I can get a better skid plate. I've smashed that "brush guard" so many times and it does its job by taking the beating for the fuel tank. I think if my fuel tank didn't burst on hell's revenge when I hit it hard on the exit, it should be good for any impact. I do think something should be done, but as well when they compared to the Explorer as its "safer", I've seen a lot of those 95-01 Explorers wrecked in the junkyard that the front end is burnt to a crisp.
