Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

where, besides the dealer, can you get a wiring harness kit for a WJ? The 99 we just bought doesn't have one & we want to also pull once we get the hitch installed. How does it install? The harness on our '00 goes up thru a hole in the body to who knows where.

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

When I was at U-Haul, I looked on their rack and they had several model-specific wiring modules. I didn't see one for a jeep, but I'm sure they have or can get one. When I made the appointment for the hitch, they asked me if I wanted the complete package, but I didn't want to spend the $$. They also had 2 sizes of trans coolers there.

The factory module is in the side panel behind the driver's or passenger's taillight. You pull apart the connector on the lighting harness and install it, plugging the original harness into both sides.

You might try places like etrailer.com

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

WAIT!!! Just about everything I told you about the trailer hitch inspection is WRONG! Chrysler only considers the thru-the-bumper hitch adequate for crash protection and will install one for free. They have a template to cut the bumper and a bezel to cover it with a bracket for a lighting plug.

I have a problem with my jeep because U-Haul broke 2 bolts and cut the frame to put plates with bolts into the drain holes! The service manager showed me, took pictures, and told me to go back to U-Haul to have them fix it right, drill out the 2 bolts, re-thread them, and weld up the frame where they cut it. He said the way it was now, it wouldn't support the full tow capacity without ripping out! I got VERY ANGRY!!! I can see a lawsuit coming!

He told me he could fix it but I'd have to pay for it. Just what I need after I thought I had everything fixed that needed to be. This exchange happened about 2 hours ago and I had to share it!

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

Absolutely! Why would I make that up? I just downloaded a form from U-Haul to fill out called "Notice of Dispute" that I will use if Customer Service doesn't take care of it. This could go to small claims court or the American Arbitration Assoc. if I have to push it. I told you I was mad! They had no right to chop into my frame without telling me. They should have stopped when they broke the first bolt and told me there was a problem.

The worst part of this whole thing is I have no intention of road towing anything and just wanted the hitch as a rear recovery point and to help tow my friends out when they needed it. I agree with Chrysler that the U-Haul hitch does nothing for crash protection, but I'm not interested in resale value because I'll probably scrap this jeep when I'm thru with it. I've already spent enough money and time on this and can't afford to waste any more fixing it. I'll keep you informed as to what transpires.

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

Sonya has an appointment with the jeep dealer today to have the '99 inspected & hitch installed (they said they had the hitches, but we are the first people to call out the issue....the guy had to look it up on his computer while we were on the phone with him).
We're getting a wire harness thru the NAPA store because I waited too long to order one to be delivered. I watched the youtube video on installation. Looks like no problem if I dont' break any of the plastic panels (the video kinda blitzes right past that part).

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

I just got back from U-Haul and speaking with the store manager. He said that if any off the bolts were broken, it wouldn't have left the shop. He put it up on the lift and showed me how the DEALER had broken the bolts when they removed the hitch because one had been drilled out and replaced with a 3/8" bolt! I believe he's right because when I got home after U-Haul had installed their hitch, I wondered if they'd replaced the bolts or use the originals. All 6 bolts were there and were rusty so they must have used the originals. The one with the plate on it wasn't there before the dealer took the hitch off! NOW I have to argue with the dealer! This whole deal may go to Chrysler's customer complaint department.

I'm tempted to leave it the way it is and install a steel rear bumper.

BTW, I just thought of a way to lubricate those hidden bolts before removal. Drill a small 1/8" hole on the side of the frame channel next to each bolt, stick the tube from a can of WD-40 in and pull the trigger!

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

The guy at the jeep dealer took one walk behind the '99 today & saw no hitch....."well, we're all done here." he said. Apparently vehicles with no hitch don't qualify for a free one.....arghhh. I wanted to use it for some towing this weekend.

We'll take the '00 in next week (it has a hitch) to see how it fares. The bottom line is I want that 100 dollar gift card!!!

That is not correct. If you don't have a hitch, they are supposed to install one. They are not done here. Go to another dealer, or go back and bring them the card you should have received from Chrysler. The card has pictures on it with what is and is not acceptable, even the dealer should be able to understand the pictures. They are supposed to provide you with documentation to prove it was inspected. You then send that in with the card to Chrysler and they will send you the gift card.

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

Update on my screwup with the mounting bolts. I registered a complaint with Chrysler and was e-mailed back that they would investigate it with the dealer and respond. That was Oct 3. I still haven't heard back and I probably won't. It's really a shame, because the parts manager is a nice straight-shooter and has given me several discounts on parts because I know what I'm talking about and have bought many parts from him on a regular basis. Once when his flunky was in the stacks looking for my parts, we talked about the older Mopars.

The Service manager, on the other hand, is your typical corporate suit. He's trying to hide their screwup. They think this will die in the archives. They made the mistake of giving me a response link and a claim number.

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

I need to drop in at the dealer and push the issue a bit more. I know I was pushed aside with the statement about not having the recall parts in stock. Perhaps a call to another dealer near me in a small town might be worth the effort.
