Recall / Trailer Hitch

Got a letter yesterday, asking us to contact our local dealer or register on line to have our vehicle inspected (2000 WJ laredo). The note says they will inspect the back of the vehicle, whether it has no hitch, a factory hitch, or an aftermarket hitch (ours has the aftermarket hitch). They offer a 100 dollar visa card if we will have the vehicle inspected.

Anybody else gotten this notice?

I got it and have the later Mopar under the bumper hitch. I will let everyone know what I find out.

I got the same its legit.. Ive been waiting for a while for this recall.. I have no hitch and the hotline tells me my truck needs no inspection, but i want them to install a factory hitch.. Im gonna go straight to the dealer and show them all the articles ive seen about no hitch related accidents and hopefully they will install one free of cost

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

Just made my call to the 800 number on the recall info. In short, I have scheduled an inspection for Sept 1 @ 2 PM. I find it interesting that they treat the Mopar below-the-bumper hitch as aftermarket because it was NOT dealer installed.

More info next week after the inspection is done.

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

So the tech called and told me that the dealership has not received the stuff from FCA to do the inspection. He will call me when the stuff is in their possession. I am afraid this will leave FCA with even more egg on their face...

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

Mine has a hitch but talked to my pal at local CDJ store, he said bring it in, we will note it has the hitch in the computer system and then go on line and Il Duce (Sergio) will send you a 100$ gift card for your troubles

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

LOL... the hitch is FCA's way of "fixing" or minimizing the risk of the rear mounted gas tank being punctured and catching fire in a rear end collision. It's been out there for a long time and apparently they aren't getting the kind of response out of owners to get it fixed like they expected to. Hence the $100 prepaid Visa card as an incentive for them to do so.

That and pressure from the Feds to get on it.

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

well, if you have the hitch and the gas tank skid, your good, if not they will order them and install.

I think the Feds should force Ford to recall all Model T's and have them brought in to install safety glass since they came with the plate glass, similiar absurdity.

Sad part is the stats show WJ has fewer incidence of death by fire than most other cars and SUVs from the period, plus the rear bumper met the standard at the time.

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

Original owner of a 2000 WJ Laredo 4.7 Up-country 4x4 with no hitch. Got the letter and called the 800 number... Agent said to contact dealer directly and schedule an inspection. I've been reading that the dealer will install a hitch, but it should not be used for towing. I would like to tow so thinking I'll buy the wiring harness and install myself. Think this is okay without trans cooler? Expect to tow no more than 3000lbs.

Re: Recall / Trailer Hitch

Got the letter, went to my dealer and he inspected my 2-month-old U-Haul hitch and told me it was satisfactory, but they hadn't gotten the "Op code" for it yet so they couldn't give me a number to send to Mopar to get my Visa card and to check back after Sept 15th and they'd take care of it. I haven't gone back yet but will soon.

The trick here is they have to inspect your jeep to see if the body will support a hitch, meaning not rusted or damaged. They will install a Mopar hitch if it's okay and you don't have one. If you do and it's sound, then they won't, meaning an aftermarket hitch is alright. Chrysler is trying to get out of this at minimal expense. Also, the hitch they are putting on is NOT the thru-the-bumper factory hitch, so get that out of your head!

IF your jeep is rusted or damaged, YOU have to pay for repairs before you get a hitch! Also, you do not get the lighting module unless you pay for it.

The thing that really upset me was I had gone to the dealer earlier and asked if my jeep was "on-the-list" and they said no, so I went and got my own hitch to use as a rear recovery point and crash protection for my own peace of mind. Two months later, I got the freaking letter!

As far as towing without a trans cooler, I wouldn't do it unless you're only going to pull a small pop-up camper or utility trailer. The more weight you pull, the more heat the torque converter generates. An aux trans cooler is a good thing for ANY vehicle even in hot weather.
