selectrac shifter assembly solonoid

I'm swapping a 247 for a 242 and I realize from the posts that I don't need the shifter assmbly but I'm getting it anyway. Question is what purpose does the solonoid serve on the selectrac console shifter plate and if the tc is an '03 is it necessary. I'm guessing that the unit without is pre '02.

Re: selectrac shifter assembly solonoid

Is the solenoid not for the brake/shifter interlock mechanism? ( the one which prevents moving the shifter out of Park when the brake pedal is not pressed)

I don't know, but mine buzzes when I put it in neutral. There is also a quick thump in the shifter mechanism when you shift into 2H and then pop the trans into neutral.
