This was about 15 minute drive south of Syracuse. The hills out there are 1100' above downtown. Syracuse doesn't get a lot of big storms, just lots and lots of little ones. Its driven by the moist air collected from the southern Appalachians that turns to snow just before it reaches the Lake Ontario- St. Lawrence River valley.
Add in some lake effect snow from Lake Ontario and you've got lots and lots of precipitation. Syracuse averages 110", a little further north the small town of Pulaski gets the lake effect directly and they average about 250 (according to memory).
Most people don't believe me when I tell them how much snow I used to move. I went through two snowblower engines in 7 years.
