Tail Light Vents?

I had to change a taillight the other day and I was surprised to see a duct for the vent that is molded into the taillight lens. I didn't know they were actually functional. How do these taillight vents work? What are they venting?

Thanks as always!

Re: Tail Light Vents?

I was thinking about that the other day,If you look at it i seem you would have to be driving in reverse to make the air flow though.I'm think it a outlet for air,but for what i dont know.

Re: Tail Light Vents?

My guess would be that they're designed to vent heat (and don't do a very good job at it). When I replaced my tail light bulbs there was melted plastic.

Re: Tail Light Vents?

I think it's cabin pressure....so when you shut the door or the trunk, air has somewhere to go. IIRC, there is a duct behind the tail light housing that leads into the vehicle and there's a grate inside (like under your CD changer). It's a one way door, similar to a dryer vent.

Re: Tail Light Vents?

Interesting. There are also the vents along the "D" pillar which I thought were more for aesthetics than anything else but maybe they are functional too and tied in with the taillight vents.

Re: Tail Light Vents?

The tail light vents purge moisture from the units, so it doesn't condense into water and cause a malfunction.

The D-pillar vents keep fresh air flowing through the cabin by letting it exit out the back.

Re: Tail Light Vents?

Thanks Overspin! I guess the "D" pillar vents are like Chevy's old Astroventilation.

If they're designed to vent moisture, why didn't Chrysler design their tail lights like everyone else and make them sealed? Not trying to say you're wrong, simply an observation.

It may be because when a seal lets go, the moisture can't escape and the unit fills with water. I had that happen on a sealed front turn lamp housing on my previous WJ and it half filled up, then failed. The dealer's service manager took a look at it, put it on a hoist and drilled a hole in the bottom. When it drained, he changed the bulbs and everything was fine for four more years. Good guy too, no charge for that... and many others would have replaced the whole unit for a couple of hundred bucks.

Re: Tail Light Vents?

As said above they are for cabin pressure. When doors close or the heat/ac is on pressure can build up. While in autobody school we once taped up the vents on a buddies pick up while it was in the shop and he couldn't figure out why he kept getting a headache when he drove for like a week!

Also when the airbags go off, if the windows are intact it would create an unbelievable amount of pressure inside the cabin. The vents give the pressure a way out. They usually have a oneway flapper valve between the cabin and the atmosphere so nothing comes in.
