Thumbs up Thermostat replaced

My new to me 2000 JGC Limited 4.7 had water dripping from the thermostat housing so I decided to make it stop. I bought new thermostat and housing, drained the coolant removed the thermostat and about a tube of black RTV. I don't think the thermostat was in the housing properly, the bolts were very tight. Cleaned the area removing all the dried RTV installed the new Thermostat, no RTV, filled system. NO leaks Not a drop. Life is good, but garage floor is cold, and hard.

Re: Thermostat replaced

There should not be any RTV on the thermostat housing, the seal should be sufficient. Probably some DIY job from the previous owner to try to stop the leak in the wrong way.

Re: Thermostat replaced

No gasket other than the rubber on the thermostat, looks to me a thick gasket would hold the housing off of the rubber seal on the stat and cause or at least increase the potential of leakage.
