Tie rod & drag link assembly

My 2004 GCL has 175K miles on her. The tie rod and drag link assembly can be moved freely by hand. I intend to change everything out with new parts. If I can get the length exactly the same as the old set up, will I need an alignment? If the answer is yes, then I will change just the ends. Thanks in advance.........

Re: Tie rod & drag link assembly

In principle, when you can adjust to the exact same lenght, an alignment would not be necessary. But who knows if the actual setting is according to the specs?

Re: Tie rod & drag link assembly

True...........So I guess I will change all the parts and have it aligned. I originally thought I would change just the ends. I don't feel like fighting to get the ends loose from the original adjusting tubes. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Tie rod & drag link assembly

Smart. I did this job in my garage with maybe 110k on the clock. There was no getting those ends out. I could spin them all day, but they would not un-thread. I ended up having to order all new parts anyway. I then took it for an alignment that same week.

Effing corrosion.

...also, if you haven't already, check the "for sale" part of this forum. CheapJeep has some Moog WJ stuff for sale. Can't go wrong with that dude. He's probably got all kinds of WJ stuff to unload now that he's rolling a Ford.

Thanks for the info........I went with MOOG all the way. Everything is installed and Jeep was aligned. Nice and tight steering now. Thank goodness for the Harborfreight tie rod separator I purchased many years ago.

Gotta love Harbor Fr. for that tool you're going to use 6 times in your life. I got a press from them to take care of the rear upper control arm bushings on my WJ. Totally worth it.

Cheap is not showing us much love any more. Sent him a message about the WJ parts as I suspect mine is in need of similar repairs as the original poster.

Keep in mind he's got a Ford now...so anytime he needs to go to the store or something, he's got to call a flatbed to drag him there. That takes time.
