Towing with 2004 grand cherokee

I have a question for you all, I am new to towing a trailer with a car. I have read over and over the specs on towing capacity.

I have a just put a hitch on the jeep it is the type that bolts to the frame and is a class III. I am pulling a 16ft overall length single axle box trailer. I have noticed that we I hook the trailer to the jeep my rear sags. I still have decent clearance in the well arch but you can notice a difference.

My question is other than air bags what can you all suggest that I may use if anything to help support the rear end.

The vehicle did not come with a factory tow package.

As well am I pushing the limits of the jeep by towing such a large trailer?

Thanks in advance,

Matthew

Re: Towing with 2004 grand cherokee

You're going to need some form of weight distributing system. There are a bunch of different options and I would Google them to find what you want. Basically, it's a system that's going to keep the back end of the vehicle from sagging down like it does on a standard ball hitch.

Personally, I would say you are definitely pushing the limits of your Jeep with that trailer. You have a 4.0L Jeep w/out a towing package and I would question it's ability to stop and control that load.

Re: Towing with 2004 grand cherokee

Thanks I just check the door jame on the car and the gvwr is showing 5400. This only gives me about 1400 max weight for trailer.
