Re: transfer case swap. PLEASE HELP

or you can find a 242HD and direct bolt on and the 242HD is known to be a stronger case than the 242j

242HD just need a new rear driveshaft.

242J you will need to swap the 247 input shaft into the 242j

The differences between the 242j and 242hd are the 242j has an external slip yoke (uses a rubber dust boot) and the 242hd uses an internal slip yoke (uses an aluminum tail cone)

The 242hd also uses a thicker chain inside the case and uses thicker sprockets to correspond with the thicker chain.

The 242hd has an input shaft length of appox 1.5" so that it mates with the output of the 5/45rfe transmission in the V8s. Where the 242j's input shaft is about .83" for mating with the 42re transmission in the 4.0s.

Everything else about the cases are identical. Same gear ratios, spline counts, couplers, snap rings, front outputs, etc.

Re: transfer case swap. PLEASE HELP

Great thank you!! Thats the info I needed. I already got a 242 WJ tcase (it was pulled out of the 4.0 WJ and that is the number that is stamped on the tcase) and its stripped apart ready for the input shaft. I just wanted to make sure that the input shafts could be swapped between 247 and 242. 242HD are hard to come by. I have yet to even see one for sale. So, the plan is to just swap the input shaft and be on the way.

Does anyone know where to find a shifter bessel? I got the shifter assembly out of the donor jeep, but the plastic piece with all the selections was broken. Is there may be a part number for that?

I will let you all know how it went if you are interested.
