Transmission Shavings?

Just had my transmission fliud changed and the mechanis showed me shavings in the pan! I change every 60k and have never been shown this before.
I have 278,000 miles(crazy) with no trans issues with slipping etc.
Any thoughts and am I loooking at a rebuild.

Re: Transmission Shavings?

Some small shavings on the magnet are normal wear, especially with that many miles on it. If the transmission is running normal I wouldn't worry about it. However if there were larger shavings on the magnet or floating in the fluid, I would say get it rebuilt before it becomes a problem.

V8 or I6?

If it is behind the v8 I would look for a good used one and swap it in considering your mileage. This is a common practice (with much success) in the high horsepower world of Hemi-powered Rams.

Re: Transmission Shavings?

Does it make sense to rebuild or find a good used?

Re: Transmission Shavings?

Any picture of tbe shavings? Was the fluid still red ? With the milage you have it could easily be that one of the clutches is worn to the limits and that there is metal to metal contact, which caused the metal particles. If that is the case, then probably that clutch will start slipping soon. I would at least wait for this to happen before rebuild or transmission swap.

Was this at a regular repair shop, or one specializing in selling high priced and typically unnecessary transmission rebuilds?

Re: Transmission Shavings?

No regular shop! Not pushing to sell services
