Re: Transmission troubles

Talked with a transmission specialty shop, he basically recommended a soft rebuild with a new torque converter, the reason being is that if that clutch is falling apart its going to put metal in the transmission and ruin other parts, if he only replaced the TC I would probably be back in 6 months he said. If he rebuilds it I get a 24,000 mile warranty, plus he said these transmissions come out of a rebuild a lot stronger than the original. Ugh, all I see is $$$ at this point with enough other problems in this thing I don't know what to do.

Re: Transmission troubles

What does he mean with a Soft rebuild? The torque converter clutch is in fact nothing more then a ring of clutch material bonded to the torque converter housing. I brought my torque converter to a converter specialist, who opened it up for inspection and at that time i could see how it looks like. Unfortunately i didnīt take pictures . He had an other already rebuild converter which i took with me. I would say, drop the pan and look at the fluid and the debris in the pan. If there are metal shavings and the magnet is full of it, it could be better to have the transmission opened and all parts cleaned. If there is no metal, i would just change the torque converter (with a new or rebuild one) and call it the day.
You could ask for other opinions at other transmission shops, but ofcourse they all want/need to earn their bread and like to drive you into a (partly) rebuild transmission with the help of all kind of horror stories.

If I were in your shoes I would find a used unit with a guarantee and swap it in. I have read of tons of the Ram Hemi guys doing this with success. The 5/45RFE is pretty tough if maintained properly. That is my plan if something happens to the WJ trans.

Re: Transmission troubles

Now remember bro you have the spin on filter in there that will catch most debris before it goes into the cooler and back to the trans. I'd put my money on a new tc and fluid and filter change .The converters go bad .I had one go on my ZJ (same symptoms as you AT FIRST and if the 46 had that spin on it would have lived. Don't wait too long bro.

Agree. Try a non-transmission shop, as they may be willing to pick up a topnotch rebuilt unit from one of the big bulk rebuilders and install it for far less than a regular transmission repair place would offer.

Otherwise the only thing I can think of that Frango hasn't covered would be if that model has a temperature sensor that inhibits torque convertor lockup at very low temperature. I'd more likely suspect the clutch is toast.

If you live in/near one of the big cities, such as Long Beach, etc. there are wholesale rebuilders that will either rebuild yours or swap it in a matter of minutes.

Know of any shop names in particular? I know I can send mine in through Rock Auto to a rebuilder or I can can get a reman unit from Advance or Oreillys, my biggest problem is finding a shop that will install it without giving me grief.

Thanks everyone for your input and suggestions! You are right Dave that extra filter is one of the things I really like about the 5-45rfe's

The shops I was alluding to would be a local independent garage.
I doubt if Far Performance in Mountain View would help much, nor Stonum since you would want to look for triple-A independent shops in your area that do NOT just exist to sell overpriced and typically unnecessary transmission rebuilds with scare tactics.

These are the type of shops that specialize in dealing with slightly older vehicles, and they would know the current set of the large transmission rebuild wholesalers in the area or easy shipping.

You might try looking in your local area for the wholesalers, but some will remove/install and some won't, and some are purely wholesale whereas some will do retail work.

But a good local independent mechanic shop will typically have really good sources where they are worried about the reputation and may offer a modest warranty.

Re: Transmission troubles

A new torque converter did the trick! I finally got hooked up with my sister in law's friend who has been a mechanic for a number of years. He was able to work after hours for cash, so I ordered a new torque converter and a transmission pan and he installed it all for me. The TC locks up again and the jeep is running well! So happy to have it back, especially in time for winter!

seems like I am running in possibly same problems, but even with the p0740 I get all gears and OD works and such, just dam light on.
and I'm lucky to have a jeep enthusiast local to me that rebuilds/parts out wj's he has 4 trans in his garage with under 100k and cheaper then a new t/c ill probably do this and take my trans aparts and rebuild it to have as a spare

Re: Transmission troubles

Sounds like the same problem, my Jeep shifted fine and had all gears, just the TC wouldn't lock and I got that code. A used one with under 100k should be rock solid for ya, although if its 03 or newer I'd put in a new solenoid block just to play it safe.
