Re: What are you doing to your WJ next?

Replaced driver window motor, replaced rear axle seals, flushed tranny, flushed TC, changed differentail oil, and changed oil. Oh... what am I doing to my wj?? HA, Ill be picking it up from Manny, Moe, & Jack and going to the Car Wash
Yesterday my window fell into my door, I figured I'm a handy-man and I can fix this no problem. Once I got the door panel off I realized there was Dynamat everywhere. Carefully I removed a portion to get inside the door. It was quite funny when I pulled the window up by hand and then thought "Lemme just switch the car on and roll up the window to see if it will catch". Well the door panel was lying right next to me ha! I re-attached the PIN clip thing so I could use the switches but it seemed the wire cable inside the window motor was tangled. So I threw the panel in the back of my Jeep and headed to Pep Boys. A few quotes later and I wound up going for a complete drivetrain flush. At 124K you can never be to careful.. Wound up getting a free oil change too! Now that my WJ is going to be running clean I think ill wash out my air filter to restore those last few hp

Well, ..............................................stil l looking for a cliff........................................
Tomorrow will put the old TRS/solenoid block in the tranny to see if 2nd gear will come back. In fact both 2nd and 5th are gone or at least slipping a lot. Must be the 2C holding clutch or eventual the respective solenoid. But i'm afraid i have to pull the tranny soon............................ Tranny fluid is black, so that seems to be clutch material.
In this way i can never start modding.

Wow Frank that sucks, you are right though there is definitely some bad clutch material if your fluid is black. The problem could be in your valve body, if a piston is sticking or a return spring is broken it could be holding the clutch and causing excess wear and slipping. I've learned more than I cared to about auto transmissions when doing the shift solenoid and transgo kit lol its one of those things I want to just work and not have to think about.

Re: What are you doing to your WJ next?

The pistons in the valve body are used as accumulators. They dampen the applying pressure to the clutches. What i understood is that if a piston spring is broken or a piston is stuck, the shifting will get harsh, but it will still function normal without slipping. And if a clutch keeps pressurized when its not suppost to, the pressure switches inside the TRS/solenoid will monitor that and a DTC will be set.
While i'm in there, i will do an air pressure test on the clutches, to see if there is no abnormal leakage internally. There is probably something wrong with the pressure to the C2 holding clutch and probably already from the rebuild, because the fluid changed color quite soon after it, eventhough no slippage was observed. A damaged O'ring for example can already lower the pressure significantly and cause a clutch to slip.

Re: What are you doing to your WJ next?

Sorry to hear of the transmission problems your having Frank.

I thought the 545RFE's were pretty bullet proof too. How many miles did you get before experiencing issues and were you hauling anything?

I'm only at 50k but mine is still solid with a fluid + filter change at 42k - fluid was still bright pink and smelt sweet then too tho.

Sending some $$ to TJXJWJ for the grill/billet inserts and rear bumper step pad he has for sale. Gonna give the Columbia a bit more lovins. I know the billet inserts will looks sweet w/ the chrome tow hooks I picked up from him before. As much as I loved the Ram I had before it, the WJ is one of my all-time favorite rides.

Re: What are you doing to your WJ next?

sooo i finally got all 4 tie rod ends installed on the jeep and got it aligned. let me tell you murphy just had to F**k things up all day. what should have been a 2hr job turned into an 8hr job. not to mention it was 95+ outside on saturday.

so what happened you might ask? ill tell you hahhah

i pull up to my buddies shop and he lets me work on my jeep outside. with out even jacking the jeep up i am able to climb under and remove the 1st tie rod end, the one from the pitman arm to the steering arm. had it removed and the new one installed in less than 30 min. im sitting there saying to my self wow this is gonna be cake. ohhhh was i ever wrong about that. murphy decided to drop in say nope youre not getting out that easy. the next 3 were rusted into the tie rods so bad that i needed a torch to get them out. and there was so much rust on the inside of the threads that i couldnt install the new tierod end in its place back to the correct amount of threads. so i fought with that for about 2 hrs. just cleaning the threads out to the point i could install the new tie rod end took that long. and guess what the other 2 that were left were the same exact way. i was pissed. but what i did to make sure things would be nice and easy the next time was i put axle grease in the threads so that should prevent any rust from getting in there . that is if there is a next time. by that time i might have upgraded but who knows.
