Question What is this for?

I recently needed to change my instrument cluster speedometer panel, & I got one with the SAME numbers as mine, BUT the one I got has A/S12345 UNDER the ODOMETER, where mine had CRUISE. Now, the CRUISE is on the right side & the odometer has A/S12345 under it INSTEAD of the CRUISE. I thought it was the SAME since I CHECKED the number PLUS it came from an '04 JUST LIKE MINE, except the color of the vehicle. (mine is silver & the donor vehicle was blue). I can't figure out what it is OR what it could be used for. Everything else is working correctly, even the cruise lights up on the right side even though it was under the odometer on mine. Can someone PLEASE explain to me what I am missing on this, is it something that the donor vehicle had but mine don't? Just to let you know, I have the 2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L I6 Automatic Trans. BASICALLY the same as all the rest, or though I thought. I know it WON'T affect anything, but I am going NUTS trying to figure out what it is.
BTW, I found out not ALL '99-'04 clusters are the SAME/COMPATIBLE because I had FOUR...yes I said FOUR swapped to find that the '99-'01 is different from the '02-'04, along with the limited NOT being able to change the backlighting, which is what I wanted to do from the start, (and FINALLY ACCOMPLISHED!) But, if anyone can tell me what it is that A/S12345 is all about, I would appreciate it! Thanks!

Re: What is this for?

Early production models have the cruise indicator light on the right side of the cluster, while newer models have the cruise indicator text in the odometer fluorescent display.
The AS 12345 as far as i know is an option never used on the WJ. It had to do with the gear positions and auto stick.

Re: What is this for?

Thank you Very Much! I was curious as to what it did on the 'original' (or the vehicles that they came on) vehicle. It means nothing, so I won't worry about it because whoever had it on their vehicle didn't have it doing anything either. As for the 'newer' models, They BOTH came from an '04, but I guess mine was newer than the '04 the donor was. Anyway, Thanks again & I Appreciate ALL the replies you give me!

Re: What is this for?

Yeah, that would be nice. I would like to have something that works if it is there.

Re: What is this for?

Actually the a/s 12345 was used on the Euro WJ with the 2.7l diesel and WA580 transmission, which had an autostick mode. My U.S. 2002 WJ Laredo with 4.7 has that in the cluster as well. When the sunlight hits it just right you can see it.

THANKS, I wonder why they put it in other Jeeps than the ones it was intended for. That's how I found out that the cluster panel had that, I saw the glare from the sun and thought, "this is cool, it tells you what gear your in." (Because my old one just had the 'cruise' down there.) BUT, I also found out that isn't the case. I appreciate your input and information about what it was.

You're welcome. I believe it went into all clusters once that engine was adapted into the WJ, it was cheaper to have one cluster and leave it 'dark' where it wasn't necessary. Not sure if you could make it work, besides the electronic side, you would need a modified or different shifter to allow for 'tap' shifts.

I don't think it is worth the trouble to go through all the modifications needed to just have that actually work. I'll just have to get used to that part being dark and the cruise on the right side of the panel. Actually, it is more noticeable over there than under the odometer.

Are you sure about this? Eventhough it was a testcase from jeep and it was incorporated on a showmodel on a 2004 motorshow in Europe, it most probably was never used in any series model. The showmodel was from the Black Pearl series and was a model above the Overland, so the topmodel. After this show it never showed up in any of the series build Black Pearl models that i know of. Attached picture shows how the shift mechanism looked like for the auto stick function.
