What Upgrades Should I Do?

Well, to make this quick, I'm 17 and this is my first Jeep. I'm looking at getting some upgrades since I now have a job. So, before everyone starts suggesting lifts let me just say, it's not 4WD unfortunately. So, lifts are out of the question. Here are my vehicle specs...

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 2WD
4.0L I6
Inferno Red

Here's a picture (It's off my Facebook so it's not the best quality). I'll get some better pictures this weekend.

Here are the upgrades I've already done...
2 12" Kenwood Subs
Alpine Type S 6.5" Speakers and Alpine Type E 6.5" Speakers
Kenwood Stereo Head
Spyder LED/Halo Projector Headlights
Interior Accent Lighting

Here are the upgrades I have in mind...
2.5" Kolak Magnaflow Exhaust
K&N Air Intake System
JK Wheels (Where can I get these!?)
Custom Floor Mats (It didn't come with any!)
Mud Flaps
LED Tailights

So, what else? Any recommendations?

Start with the ones you really need first(tires ,brakes, stuff like that) then move on to the fun stuff Since its 2wd maybe even consider lowering it a bit to make it handle better.

Re: What Upgrades Should I Do?

as far as performance mods go, usually I/H/E is what opens up the vehicle and gets it going. (Intake/Headers/Exhaust). Looks like you got this angle covered for the most part and with the interior lighting and sound, you've definitely spruced up the cabin a notch.

As far as exterior mods go, tires and wheels make the biggest difference on any vehicle. Tint the front windows if you haven't already. A bug deflector and window visors would be a decent edition if you feel they're required. Tail light/headlight/Grill gaurds are cool looking but depends on the look you want. Rock rails or sliders would give it an off road presences even if you are 2WD and of course, the overland rock rails look more like skirts and are stealthy looking imo compared to the tubular style like on the rocky mountain/freedom edition. You can also tint your tails and headlights, do the quad tail light mod or replace with LED. Black out the emblems or debadge all together for a cleaner look.

For the interior you can get a dash kit to set it off, IPC dash kits in texas is decent, I ordered a brushed aluminum kit for a car I had 4 years back and it was nice. They make wood, carbon fibre, etc... An overland steering wheel is on my list, i like the solid feel of the wooden wheel VS the spongy OEM stock wheel on my limited. You can change the gauge faces and insert aluminum or painted bezels to accent them. I havent looked into it but I'm sure you could find and after market shift knob and matching e brake handle if you decide go with a dash kit and match them all up.

If you dont have HIDs in your projectors thats the most logical next step. You can upgrade the brakes which would not only be a worth while project but will also make you safer and more confident on the road.

All things considered its going to come down to time and money. If you got both, its limitless. If you are scraping by on the both theres lots of low cost items I already mentioned than you can work with. i.e. painting brake calipers, tinting head/tail lights, deflectors/visors, painting/removing emblems, etc.. etc.. you can also dechrome the Jeep and paint the grille and other components body colour or black them out with flat black paint or Plast Dip (look it up) which is very easy and low cost.

Good luck and post pics of your progress! Ahhhh! To be 17 again!

Re: What Upgrades Should I Do?

I would recommend this to improve handling:

Addco front and rear swaybars (The rear really stiffens up the Jeep nicely, make sure you buy energy greaseable bushings with it).

I know Eibach actually sells front and rear sway bars in addition to the lowering springs so you might want to consider that.

If your shocks are dead, look into bilstein HD's

Giggity pretty covered the rest although I personally wouldn't invest a lot into performance. The K&N is nice though. Other than that, get HIDS, tint, etc.

Re: What Upgrades Should I Do?

Alright, thanks!

I was actually planning on painting the calipers and maybe even the wheels. If I were to get the JK 18" wheels and get normal sized tires for them would there be any trimming involved?

Also, is there anywhere I can get painted door handles? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the limiteds came with the door handles painted right?

Not sure what wheels you are referring to, but I can't see any problems at all. I run 20" SRTs with 275/45 tires and do get a rub on one side near full lock but but only because a few plastic rivets in the wheel arch are missing so I can see no problems for you.

The limited versions do come with color coded trim so you could either get handles from a scrap yard in the same color as your truck or take it to a bodyshop to get them colorcoded.

Only thing I'd change on your list is the mud flaps - don't bother with them. Roof rail delete is a nice visual mod too that is basically free - just need caps to cover the holes.

Oh and welcome to JG!
