What's your Maintenance Cost?`

I keep a log of all the maintenance I do to my vehicle. If something gets changed then I log the date, mileage, and part cost. This weekend while talking to a couple different people on different occasions, they both happened to mention that I'm always working on my Jeep (I replaced 2 tie rod ends this weekend). Unfortunately always working on the Jeep isn't for fun projects, it's always for fixing issues or maintenance.

Out of curiosity I decided that I would tally up my non-routine maintenance cost. I bought the Jeep in June 2010 with 76k miles and today it sits at 169k miles. In that 4.667 years (93k miles, 90% highway) I have spent just over $1,800 on replacement parts alone, or almost $400/year in parts. I do my own work so there's no labor charge in that cost. That cost doesn't include things like oil changes, new tires, etc. It's things like wheel bearings, radiator, tie rod ends, etc.

I'm just curious on how that stacks up against others cost. How much do you spend on maintenance parts for your Jeep in a year?

I just prefer not to think about this, it would make me feel bad about the jeep.,

If you had to add in the maintenance labour cost based on what dealers charge what do you think it would be? Roughly.

Because I do a lot of my own maintenance as well. Even replaced a supercharger on a Grand Prix. No small feat.

Some have been fun and some... not so much.

But if you had to put a dollar amount to it?

Curious

Purchased in the summer of 2010 with 68k and have spent almost exactly $3k on actual repairs. This includes some shop labor. Not bad if you ask me. Not bad at all. This does NOT include anything brake-related as I deem that "regular maintenance". These are items that failed on me and needed to be replaced/repaired. Oddly enough, most of it is suspension related. Effing road salt.

I would say it would easily be 3x the cost if I included labor. I replaced the rear main seal and that was a $15 job for the main seal and $25 for an oil pan gasket. Take it to a shop and that's easily a $300+ job. I replaced a pinion seal and that was like $10 for the seal and a few more for the new crush sleeve. Take it to a shop, probably as much or more than the rear main.

Honestly, if I had to take it to a shop for everything I would have sold the vehicle long ago because it would kill me.

Same on my cost. What I'm looking at is how much more this Jeep has cost me than any other vehicle I've owned (thus I don't include oil changes, brakes, and other routine maintenance). In all my vehicle experience, $400/year in parts alone is stupid high. It's even worse when you consider that I can count on one hand the number of replaced items that have been $100 or more. That comes to an average of replacing something every 3 months (if they cost $100/each).

That's AWFUL and I've owned a ton of high mileage vehicles. I'm just curious if it's just my Jeep or a standard Jeep thing (Just Empty Every Pocket). I'm looking for a "new" vehicle and if it's a common Jeep thing (which I think it might be), I'm not putting myself in another maintenance heavy vehicle.

I can't blame you. With me, it's part of the "fun" of owning one. If you took what I've spent on just maintenance items vs what I've spent on upgrades, there is a huge, HUGE difference. I'm putting money into any vehicle I am going own because for me it's not just transport, it's a hobby. For those that don't take this crap as a hobby, I'd totally understand. When I think "low maintenance", I don't think of any 4x4 vehicle. I think of Honda, some Toyotas, Mazdas, etc.

Re: What's your Maintenance Cost?`

I've had mine about 1.5 years and have about $1500 in parts only. And that doesn't even come close to getting it in good operating condition. I have an excel spreadsheet of parts that need to be addressed, with a priority. Lately because of finances, I've been crossing them off AFTER they break. I'm all about being a Jeep guy, and I've owned a CJ-7, and a ZJ, but this will seriously be the LAST Jeep I will ever buy.

Except to buy another CJ-7 again some day. Seriously, these are the most pathetic build quality vehicles to ever roll off the line with Jeep stamped 80 places on them. Daimler apparently gave zero shits with this one.

Re: What's your Maintenance Cost?`

I have a folder of receipts but really don't track the yearly costs. Like Tony, my biggest expenses are suspension. Can't forget the radiator and power steering pump. I have done regular things like plugs, air filter, fuel filter, etc along the way.

Re: What's your Maintenance Cost?`

I've owned my '02 WJ from new and it only has 57,000 miles. This last year got more expensive for maintenance. For the last 3 years I have averaged $165/month. For the 2 years prior it was $87/mo in 2012 and $43/month in 2013. Last year I needed 2 tie rod ends, hydraulic pump, Falken Wildpeak tires, level lift, steering stabilizer, battery, hood struts, brake system flush, all gear oils changed, trans service, alignment, new headlights etc. The average in 2014 was $236/month.

I expect 2015 to be back to normal.

I haven't owned mine long, only since March 2014.
I bought it with 64,000miles on it, and I have been fairly lucky so far.
I have done everything that's been done to it except tire installed on wheels and some window tint.

So far:
Replaced coolant over flow tank(cracked) -$8 at junkyard
2 oil changes, oil/filter - $25ea
New tires - $280 (Got a deal on some with a little over 3/4tread)
Replaced a hose to an evap Canister - $30
Reusable cone style air filter for the intake - $40
New high beam light bulb - $28
New light bulb for 3rd/hatch brake light - $9

Not to bad for the first full year on a used jeep I suppose, I was lucky it was low miles, and the other owner took good care of it for a 15yro vehicle.
Lots of other cost with lifts, window tint, adj parts...but none are really maintenance.
