will not start now

I have a 2000 WJ 4.7 that I have major plans for, but I am having this trouble now.
this started with a trip to work where it died in the parking lot as I was talking with a coworker. It started just fine, and I went to the bank 2 blocks away. It died again at the atm, and I could not get it started for 30 minutes or so but it ran just fine getting home.
I started with a fuel fliter and was amazed at what I found "don't want to talk about it" after making hose connections, it al went fine for an hour, it died again, I started checking over the connections all were fine and found the negative battery connection lose, this is what I get for taking it to the local shop. I replaced the terminal on the negative connection, and it started right up and ran fine for 2 days. I went to go see a house and it died with in 2 miles of the house, again about 25-30 minutes later it started up with a sputter. I drove to the house and it died while sitting idle and would not start again.
I notices when I put the key in the on position the fuel gauge stays on E "I just fueled up"
I was thinking that I had a fuel pump issue but the gauge has always shown correctly until now, there is also a smell of not gas but it smell like the engine is flooded.
any help here on this ?

Re: will not start now

Welcome to the garage.
I would suspect the crank or cam sensor, but it can be something else. Did only the fuel gauge go to empty, or the other instruments stopped working as well?
Is there any fault code stored doing the keydance? Ignition switch off/run three times and leave in run at the third time. odometer will show "DONE" when no faults, or any fault code(s).

Re: will not start now

ok now its running like a stripped arced ape. all I did was let it sit for an hour and when I went to start it I bumped the panic button on my key pad the alarm went off and I opened the door and put the key in turned it and it started and is running fine, I did the key dance and got a p700 code but that's tranny, the fluid is a quart low but, this had me scratching my head.

PS I don't think the alarm has anything to do with the problem"

Re: will not start now

Did it happen that it wouldn´t start when cold? Because it seems to have this problem only after running for some time.

Re: will not start now

So it seems to be temperature related. Many times a speed sensor (crank or cam) fails when its old and getting hot, even without any fault code set. Its not a garantee though, it could still be something else as well.
