Re: WJ radiator

I changed it on my jeep and it was a real pain in the a**. There is not just a simple seal, but the seal is moulded to a tray. You will have to change it as one part (bought mine from Rockauto.com)
The oil pan gasket with tray is bolted to the engine, so you will have to pry in between the pan and the seal (and not in between the seal and the engine). It took me quite some effort to get the seal to break loose and the pan deformed a bit at some places. After the pan is down, you will have to remove the oil pickup tube (two bolts) and one more other bolt. I had a piece of aluminum (probably from an oil bottle seal) on the pickup tube screen.
Before getting to the pan, you will have to remove the structural cover in between engine and transmission, lower the exhaust Y-pipe and remove the starter. The transmission cooler lines should be hold out of the way with some ty-wraps or alike.
By the way, why is the title saying " WJ radiator"?

Re: WJ radiator

Thanks for the heads up! I also have to replace my radiator. I meant to put both issues in the title. Any advice on the radiator?

Re: WJ radiator

Radiator is probably leaking from a crack in one of the plastic tanks?
I changed mine with a part from Rockauto.com. I put a Spectra Premium in and it is holding well. I would also change the thermostat, radiator cap and both radiator hoses at the same time.
You can remove the radiator with cooling fan as one unit and remove the cooling fan with the radiator on the ground. That way is easier to get access to the lower bolts.

Re: WJ radiator

The radiator is a bit of a pain. The suggestion of moving the fan and radiator makes senses. I managed to replace mine without removing the fan but it took patience and more patience to not damage the fins on the new radiator.

Re: WJ radiator

replaced mine yesterday without removing the fan. 6 hours worth of a lot of work and so far so good. I wasn't sure how to remove the fan but adjusting it did seem to help some. Hope I never have to go through that again!
