Re: WJ Reverse Gear Issues when Warm

Did you remove the line pressure sensor connector and see if it made any difference?
Maybe if the problem is a binding LR switch valve, that a higher line pressure will solve the problem, it could be just the little extra push to get the valve over to the other position.
I would normally include one or more pages from the service manual with my posts, in this case the hydraulic schematic, but i have a new computer and for some reason the CutePDF writer will not do its job.

Re: WJ Reverse Gear Issues when Warm

The CutePDF writer is online again, so here attached two hydraulic diagrams in case you want to brainstorm a bit.
One shows the hydraulic fluid flow in Reverse, with the LR switch valve in one position, and the other the flow in first gear, with the same LR switch valve in the opposite position. If that valve sticks or binds, you will loose the LR clutch, which seems to be the case with your jeep in Reverse.

Thanks I will try the pressure sensor trick this weekend, have ordered new sensors. Should be here in a couple of weeks... It's a long way to Aussie land.

Re: WJ Reverse Gear Issues when Warm

So I have fitted the line pressure booster and no luck so it looks like I need to replace the valve body. Very difficult to find one in Aus so have you any recommendations of who would ship one to Aus ?

Re: WJ Reverse Gear Issues when Warm

Why don't you try first to open the valve body up and check the switch valve for sticking. Maybe some dirt went in it and is causing the valve to stick. Its no rocket sience to open it up, you will only need a clean bench and a new seal for the solenoid block, because there is a big change that the small seal strips on the seal plate will get damaged during removal. If you can't find the sealplate where you live, you can order one here: www.electricaladvantage.net. You most probably still have the premod black connector solenoid block, which you will have to tell them to get the right part. If the solenoid block was changed recently, then it can have a white connector, which is post mod and uses an other seal plate.

Re: WJ Reverse Gear Issues when Warm

Thanks for the advise but I don't want to open it up to find that it needs a repair and have no car. Also a remanufactured one should have the upgraded plate and reverse valve.
Cheers

Re: WJ Reverse Gear Issues when Warm

There are many sites where you can buy a valve body, remanufactured or taken from a transmission. Probably e-bay will have some as well. Not a cheap fix.
Have a look here: 45RFE, 5-45RFE, 68RFE Remanufactured Valve Bodies Transmission Parts and here: http://www.sharadon.com/photogallery...-body-stage-ii
If you buy the transgo shift kit, then there will be the heavy duty accumulator plate, new shuttle valve and new springs for the accumulators. This will result in less clutch wear, because the shift overlap (one clutch is releasing while the other is applying, so in fact both clutches (with different speeds) are pressurized) time is reduced.

Re: WJ Reverse Gear Issues when Warm

No luck with a valve body yet but wondered if an additive might help to clean and add pressure ?

Re: WJ Reverse Gear Issues when Warm

I would not expect wonders from transmission fluid additives. It could help in some cases, but i wonīt expect any special cleaning properties from it. If the problem is a sticking valve due to something blocking it, it most probably only gets better by opening the valve body and removing the particle.
You already put the line pressure booster in it and it didnīt help, i would not expect any pressure increase due to the additive.
