ZJ/WJ engine swap?

I have a 2000 grand Cherokee Laredo with an inline 6, engine needs to be replaced, i came across a 1998 with a 4.0 as well, i have searched online, called the service department at the dealership and can not get a clear cut answer on if the ZJ is compatible in my 2000? If anyone knows anything, even if i can use anything from the ZJ to put in my WJ, internal workings such as crank, cam, pistons, etc, i need any and all options please!

Internals should be the same.

Where it changes is the block I believe 99-04 4.0L use new Coil on plug so there is no spark plug wires or distributor.

I also believe the 99 Intake etc is more free flowing.

You would be better off getting one from a 99-04 GC.

Re: ZJ/WJ engine swap?

The definitive answer is no because they changed the motor mount locations on the later block and they won't fit the ZJ block. In addition, they moved the oil filter because it was in the way of the new mounts and added bosses to bolt the coil pack on the head. The mounts were moved to balance the 4.7 engine.

HOWEVER, aftermarket companies make motor mounts to fit the 5.2/5.9 engine in the WJ, so I'd imagine you could use those, but don't quote me on that.

The easiest way to identify the 2 motors is the location of the oil filter. If it's screwed into the side of the block, it's the '99-'04 engine.

The intake manifold is a new design to flow more freely and it will fit the older engines. You also have the problem with the 0331 head on the 99-01 engines. Supposedly, the cracking problem was fixed for 02-04. When my head cracked, I bought an Odessa head from Clearwater Cylinders Heads. $455 complete with valves. This head is designed to fit BOTH engines.

I do believe the internal parts are the same, but there might be a difference with the oil pump because on the newer blocks it pumps directly into an oil gallery instead of into the filter adapter.

1998 zj screws into the side of the block. and it has the older motor mounts. but pretty much NO. you won't be putting a zj block in a wj. Just to clarify, im sure it is possible to steer your car with your feet, but for me, its not worth trying.
