FRP Ford 5.0 head build

As some of you know, when I moved to Vero Beach, I lost my shop/garage space. A friend of mine who lives a little ways away allows me to use his place to do all my portwork. I'm not one to take and not return a favor, so I made an agreement with him that I would port some heads he has in return for letting me use his space, electric etc.

The vehicle in question is DEFINITELY unique, and budget-oriented. So I wont be going all out, because the money isnt there to go all out. But he is a good friend, and has alot to gain from where he is at right now.

Here is the setup as of right now:
'86 Mercury Grand Marquis
302 non-HO (stock longblock from the factory), estimated 250+k miles
New bearings about 30k ago
rebuilt AOD w/ Supercoupe converter
Carb conversion, running a Holley 650 double pumper
Weiand Dual Plane Intake
Mustang shorty headers, X pipe, no cats, no name mufflers
4.10 gears
31" rear tires
Mustang Koni shocks, KYB gasadjust shocks up front
Stiffer coils all around
unknown camshaft, E303 or X303 possibly.

The car runs relatively strong for what it is, no blowby at all, but needs to be sorted out. Somehow the stock valvetrain is holding up to whatever cam is in it (was purchased under the impression that it was a HO cam), but we know it is on borrowed time.

I have made the following demands:
Valve springs MUST be upgraded
Chromoly pushrods are a must
Heads must be hot tanked as they are freshly machined but have been exposed for a long time
Roller rockers should be considered

The heads in question are OEM Ford E6 heads. These are the same castings as are what are on the car now. These have been freshly machined and have all new valvetrain but were rebuilt to just above OEM spec. These heads are generally dismissed as junk in the Ford world, however, this will allow for a, generally speaking, A to B comparison.

This will be an ongoing project that will largely be on the backburner to porting things for you folks...but I figured some of you would take interest.

I will get some pics of the actual heads in question this weekend when I go back up there.

In the meantime, here are some pics of the design, mainly the combustion chamber. I will be removing the "horn" in between the valves, which is one of the main problems with this casting to begin with, to help flow.

With the amount of good e7's and stock ho intakes that hit the junkyard each year as guys do upgrades,it begs the question, why use these? Should have no problem finding a good, used, FREE, set?

Because we already have these, and also because of the amount of lift he is running, he NEEDs the extra P2V clearance that the E6s provide. 86s have no valve reliefs in the piston and the E6s valves sit higher in the chamber than E7s do. Obviously if he has to swap cams, that makes what should be a cheap and easy head swap into a more expensive, more labor intensive project.

What little data there is suggests that E6s and E7s flow roughly the same, the E6s just need those stupid horns removed. It doesnt take much to improve either of these heads, because they both suck.

I do see what your saying but let me play the villian here for a sec (just throwing out my thoughts, no flaming intended)

Yes the e6's and 7's, once ported should be within about 5% of each other,in a mild build thats basically nothing. BUT, with a set of e7's, you have the heads to work on while he drives around. Also,the compression ratio goes up slightly with the e7's so he picks up a bit of hp and torque across the curve. As for ptv clearance, the B cam should still have some with the e7's installed, I would imagine the X not so but i think that you would have to be pretty dumb to run that big of a cam on a stock motor (you'd also have a very choppy idle and drivability problems) so lets assume that is not what's been installed in the car already.

Either way, home porting is fun,hope you don't eat too much metal! lol

None taken, I realize that I am going against the grain here in using E6 heads. In the Ford world everyone pretty much uses the same mods, its all laid out for them pretty clearly so everyone supports and bashes mostly the same parts.

To clarify, E6s are on the car now, AND we have a 2nd set of E6s that are freshly machined. So the car is not going to see significant downtime other than the install itself, which should be done in a few hours tops. He is a mechanic by trade and works VERY fast so this job should be a simple one.

The cam in the car has been in there for some time now, and it looks like it is in fact an X cam. It is possible it isnt but it lopes hard when the idle is set low. Its either an E, F, or X. Without valve reliefs, the P2V clearance is about .500 at best IIRC and I think all of those exceed .500 w/ 1.6 rockers which is likely what he'll be running.

It goes without saying that I dont necessarily agree with the general setup of the car. It needs to be lowered, it needs a looser converter, and I wish we knew what cam was in it for sure because then we could mill the heads accordingly to pick up some compression. With E6s we have .125 extra P2V so we could in theory skim them 20-40 thou and get away with it.

The car with stock heads drives fine although needs further tuning. It will be tuned right once the headwork is done. Remember that this is not an EFI car so is less sensitive to the big camshaft.
