3.7L & 4.7L ATI Harmonic Damper & UNDERDRIVE PULLEY

We have been working with ATI in order to come out with a much needed Performance harmonic damper. The wait is over and we now have one more reason to build our 3.7L & 4.7L engines.

For those who dont know what a balancer does or why its important to step up to a performance balancer here is some incite I put together found on the web.

The engine system is a complex system which is composed of various metals, tubes and wires on which you may find very complicated if you don’t have a basic idea on car assembly. The main function of the engine system is to convert gasoline or diesel if it’s a diesel engine into motion so that you car can move. And this is done by burning it inside the engine which is known as the internal combustion engine. The engine system is composed of various parts and damage to any of these parts will greatly affect the overall performance of the engine that is why some materials and devices are attached to it to prevent this problem. One of which is the harmonic balancer.

The harmonic balancer, which is also known as a harmonic damper, is essential to the longevity of an engine since it prevents crankshaft failure. It is usually mounted at the front end of the crankshaft in order to absorb and dissipate the majority of the vibration energy. It consists of the hub, an outer weight ring, and a sandwiched layer of flexible rubber. It is the rubber that absorbs the energy of the vibrating crankshaft in the form of heat, damping the amount of vibration to within safe limits.

The crankshaft is the part of the engine that converts the up and down motion of the pistons and connecting rods during the combustion cycle into rotary motion that spins the transmission and the vehicle’s drive wheels. Every time a cylinder fires, the force twists the crankshaft. When the cylinder stops firing the force ceases to act and the crankshaft starts to return to the untwisted position. However, the crankshaft will overshoot and begin to twist in the opposite direction, and then back again. Eventually the crankshaft will experience torsional vibration which can cause it to fail after some time.

In order to keep this problem from occurring, installing a harmonic balancer for your vehicle is necessary. The entire engine system should always be in good working condition in order to give you a safer and more relaxing riding experience.

is this dyno proven? Can you get any HP from this? Or is it more of a precaution?

The 4.7L Dampner has NOT been DYNO TESTED... But Performance harmonic dampners have been tested over time for over 30 years on Dynos accross the country. Performance dampers are one of those REAL performance mods and they are not a new idea or type of snake oil. They protect your engine at high RPMs by cancelling out harmonics created by your constantly flexing crankshaft... if your anything like me... your at WOT 6100RPMs 20 times a day 7 days a week... I know I need one, and Im on this GP list

With this dampener you also have the option to run an underdrive pulley... 10% or 25%.... I'm going to run the 25% pulley. Under driving your accessories and gaining control of your engine harmonics at high RPM will add u p to more HP and a longer living engine.

Re: 3.7L & 4.7L ATI Harmonic Damper & UNDERDRIVE PULLEY

I have a super damper on my racecar and it makes a big difference in how the balance of my motor is,especially at high rpm's.It is a good idea to have one on any performance oriented vehicle and it can also be used on a everyday street vehicle.Be glad its as cheap as it is. I paid 500 bucks for my Buick one...

Are those Turbo Grand Nationals in your driveway (AVTR)? Man I used to love watching those run down the track... Fastest dam 6cyl's I have ever seen.

After a closer look they dont appear to be what I thought... The small picture is difficult to make out. You mentioned Buick and a quick glips at your AVTR got me all excited.

yes....as far as I know theres no settings in the SC for the cams. I probably need a custom tune from B&G once I get everything done to optimize what i have

Re: 3.7L & 4.7L ATI Harmonic Damper & UNDERDRIVE PULLEY

My guess is you remove your serp belt, and then remove the main pulley, usually held on either with 4 small bolts, or one large nut which would require an impact gun (powerful one at that). Then you pull the stock pulley and I think crank balancer off..

Install is the opposite.

If there isn't enough room to fit the impact gun your looking at pulling the radiator, not fun...

I'll wait for nick to chime in on this one...

I have good advice... STAY AWAY FROM BG... They are bad news and can not tune a 4.7L to save their life.

Not to mention that once Dave over at BG gets your money... hes done with you. He is a "WAS BEEN" as once upon a time he could tune a 5.2L or 5.9L.

My truck ran slower with the BG tune then it did with the stock tune... he kept telling me I needed 30lb injectors... (Because he did not want to alter the tune) So I found some 27.5lb injectors for 430 bucks shipped over night and they just caused an INDUCED lean condition at WOT. He blamed all his bad advice on me and decided after his 3rd failed attempt at getting my tune right that I would need to start paying him for his time... Mind you, I had already spent over 1,000 bucks on him and his bad advice... now he wanted me to pay him more without a glimer of hope that he could even get it right. When the dust settled he agreed to refund my money as long as I sent him my PCM so he could remove his tune... I received my PCM back locked and useless to anyone... it did not even have a stock tune in it... he made it useless to me or anyone who may be able to tune it... even the dealership was locked out from it.

Long story short:

  1. STOCK = 10.45
  2. SUPERCHIPS = 9.91
  3. BG = 10.75
  4. SCT = 9.49

Only difference in all those runs was the tune.

You will need a damper puller/installer kit specific to the 4.7L... AutoZone has them.

Power tools makes it a rather simple job... ZAP the old one off and ZAP the new one on. Im not sure on your clearance... I know on my Ram I was able to leave the radiator in place when I installed the ASP pulley..

With the H/O cams & stock heads & Superchips I was running 9.91's in the 1/8 mile.
