Re: Bwoody 4.7 CAI?????????????????????

I wouldnt waste my time on the PVC. It isnt made to withstand the heating/cooling cycles and becomes brittle over time. I would hate to see a PVC intake implode sending pieces of plastic into the intake manifold and beyond.
Maxst's intake is the best way to go...metal tubing or not. Regardless what others think about aluminum...it does not affect intake temps as I have shown in other discussions. Studies by AEM engineers and others have shown this. The air is not in the intake tube long enough for the tube to transfer any heat. Plus aluminum actually deflects heat until much higher temps that an engine bay can produce.

Re: Bwoody 4.7 CAI?????????????????????

Called and got a little update from Mike at Bwoody....

It looks like the 2nd company said they cannot bend the pipe. they say the 3.5" pipe is too small and the bends are too tight, they do not want to mass produce it.

Mike says this is not a show stopper and he has sent it to a THIRD company to outsource the mass production. He says he does not want to post up until he knows concrete dates from this third manufacturer. Mostly because of what has been happening with all of the other suppliers.

He says it is comming, it really is just a matter of dealing with the 3.5" pipe our 4.7's need.

Actually after reading your post you kind of scared me from using PVC... But after thinking about it more and more because I bought all of the 4" pipe i needed for about $20 I'm thinking about doing it after seeing a few people using the same thing for a while now. I bought an obd2 port reader and I am going to monitor the IAT sensor on my way home tonight, the other day i ran the jeep idle in the garage for about 10 mins didn't get to operation temps but IAT stayed around 90deg so what I'm thinking is if you wrap the tube in some heat wrap. and maybe craft a peace of sheet metal to sit about a 1/2 in from the intake pipe and the engine wouldn't that protect it enough from the heat enough? also for $20 a year you could rebuild it from new pipe if you didn't like the extended change in temps.

Thats my thoughts what do you all think?

Re: Bwoody 4.7 CAI?????????????????????

I agree with scott now that he mentions the side effects possible if using PVC. I think it looks like ass and like scot said what if it breaks and damages the engine.

I am going to hold out for a bit longer on the bwoody intake and if all else fails then i will look in to aluminum tubing.

I would return the PVC and do it right. PVC is for sewer pipes......

Re: Bwoody 4.7 CAI?????????????????????

I used PVC for years, and while I do not recommend it to anyone, it IS safe. Ghetto, and tacky, but safe. Nobody in this thread is making nearly enough power to implode 1/4" thick PVC walls. I know someone with a Heads/Cam/6.1 Intake Hemi that is using 4" PVC.....no problems. He drag races (and while this isn't smart or condoned, street races) all the time, in the Texas heat..... with no issues whatsoever.

Heat soak DOES affect performance w/ an aluminum intake, I dont care what an engineer says. I have the timeslips to prove it. The real world is not a ISO certified lab. And it's not a drag strip either, but in situations where there is minimal air flowing through the engine bay (like in between runs at a drag strip, or stop& go traffic), yes, it does soak in. If you are cruising down the highway, I really doubt there is a difference in IATs between metal or plastic. If anything I would dare to say that perhaps IATs would be cooler at a certain speed with aluminum. I think AEM's preference for aluminum has more to do with sound (a metal intake will generate more sound than a plastic one) and cost than anything else.

As mentioned in other threads...I run a 4" aluminum intake that has been wrapped extensively in insulation to isolate it from the engine bay.

Re: Bwoody 4.7 CAI?????????????????????

it has nothing to do with power imploding the PVC...it is the constant heat/cool cycles and PVC is not made for that.
Not trying to start an argument...but you have to be REAL here. Are you gonna be responsible when sewer pipe breaks and ruins someone engine?
And Im sorry......but Ill take and engineers word over yours anyday. No disrespect here...but this is how they make their living and they work with this everyday...not a few times at the track. No doubt in stop and go driving is say.....NYC...metal tubing will affect the temps.....but any intake is not gonna be able to overcome that.

Nobody is disagreeing about the fact that PVC is not meant or designed for automotive use. And I already stated that I do not recommend going that route. But, it does work. Especially when insulated from heat with something as simple as header wrap (which isn't even designed to keep radiant heat out anyways). I personally recommend using aluminum at minimum, if not insulated aluminum.

The same engineers that you trust also managed to make their living creating blunders such as these:
