I'm not sure about Ben or the other Matt, but I researched the use of PVC under the hood of a vehicle and found that it is fine.

Yeah, I also used a heat wrap, so that could make a pretty big difference.

Re: Custom CAI

I will take a look at mine when I get home, but I haven't seen a problem yet. I did 4" PVC pipe.

Where did you find that PVC was safe to use under the hood of your car?

I never thought that heat would be an issue, but I am definitely going to keep an eye on it. Anyone know what tie difference between PVC plastic and say AME or K&N cold air intake plastic tubes?

Re: Custom CAI

I know I went with the thick PVC that Lowes has. There was another thinner PVC, but I wasn't sure, so I went with the thicker stuff. I can't remember what they call it, but that's what I searched for. Came up positive.

Re: Custom CAI

I haven't adjusted my intake since I built it back in the summer months. I did however shorten it up for winter. I noticed during the summer time that after driving in the rain the filter would be soaking wet. The inside of the pipe was dry to the bone, but the filter was wet. Which seemed to hurt performance just a tad due to lack of airflow through a wet filter. My main concern was what if during the winter months I drive through a deep puddle or it rains during the day, then at night the temps drop to below freezing. I would essentially have a block of ice on the end of my intake with no way to thaw or clean it off, and the last time I checked air doesn't flow to well through ice.

I used clamps to hold my pieces together because over time the glue can start to weaken, especially if it gets hot then cold over and over again.

Re: Custom CAI

I've run a PVC intake since 2006 fellas...it's fine. I used Schedule 40 PVC.

That being said, on one particularly hot day at Etown (95+ full humidity + racing + long wait times) the white PVC literally turned orange from the heat. After that I wrapped it with heat sheild tape.

That being said, I am tired of having a ghetto intake so I am in the market for a brand name CAI.

Re: Custom CAI

With a wet filter wouldn't that be like trying to breathe through a wet towel and be worse?
