Diablo Tune Question - Octane

So I'm now paying $4.399/gallon for 91 octane fuel with my 91 canned tune, and I'm officially throwing in the towel. I'm going to switch back to the 87 tune but my question is: "can I run 87 octane even though Jeep recommends 89 octane?"

I know their recommendation is for stock settings so if I switch to the 87 tune, will it allow me to run a lower octane since the computer is "tuned" for 87 octane fuel?

If not, I'm just going to run the 87 tune with 89 octane fuel and turn the MDS back on.

Re: Diablo Tune Question - Octane

Yeah man you can run 87 or 89 on the 87 tune.

Sucks you have to throw in the towel on 91.

Re: Diablo Tune Question - Octane

I know gas prices suck, but how much of a difference do you pay from 87 to 91? Here it's only $.20 gal ,so it's only like $3-4 a tank.

Yea it's about the same. But that would be an extra $16 a month. Not too bad but still. Haha

Re: Diablo Tune Question - Octane

Just outta interest here, how much extra performance do you get from running higher octane stuff?

We have 95 as a minimum here with the possibility of 98 for a little more. 102 is available but its twice the price!

I'm currently running a 91 tune through the superchips tuner but would be interested if a custom SCT tune could net better gains from our fuel or if its minimal.

Always been curious about that...

Re: Diablo Tune Question - Octane

You can run 87 on the stock tune with no problem. 89 oct costs just a bit more (.20/gal here) than 87, but 87 will give you lower mpg than 89 since timing is pulled to avoid knock. With todays prices, it saves money by using 89 over 87 and the hemi runs better. I get 1 mpg better with 89 than 87, and that saves about a gallon per tankful, so over $4 per fillup. IF I pay .20 less per gallon for 87, that is only $3.40 per tank saved.

Re: Diablo Tune Question - Octane

Double burn!

In case anyone would like to know, I'm still running the 91 tune but with MDS back on.. I just don't like the rough transitions that *occasionally* occur when MDS goes on/off but I'm dealing with it.

Based on my driving habits and a calculated average, I would be saving $158.60 a year if I went back to 87 octane. That's virtually nothing these days () so like I said, I'm still rockin' the 91 tune for the time being.
