Exhaust

hey everyone i am looking into a custom exhaust to run on the wj. i am looking at a magnaflow custom system that would come off doug theory headers cross through an x-pipe before exiting dual tips. im looking to have it 3" all the way back and come out a 3.5" tip. any suggestions or problems you guys see or any advice?

Uhhhh....4.7 WJ, right?

1) Headers will not fit...Others have tried
2) Unless you're OK with downpipes/tailpipes hanging REALLY low, good luck trying to route a proper X-system under a WJ, especially a 4x4
3) 3" piping on the drivers side is difficult if not impossible.

If you're really hell-bent on duals, and you want to do it right, here are your options. Either:

1) Hack off the Y-merge (where the downpipes Y into a single pipe) , weld in a H-pipe (because of the unequal length, H will be better) into mufflers of your choice (I prefer Magnaflow round case mufflers, Bullet round mufflers, or Aeroturbine ), and either dump it out the side, before the rear axle, or Y it into a single 3" tailpipe ( only because it's readily available in mandel-bent material)

2) hack up the downpipe, run a H right under the trans, weld on mufflers of your preferance, and dump after the trans

3) Give up and run a 3" single system. I went this route, and while I would have made a few small changes if I had to do it again, I was very very happy with what I did. I'm also selling a mostly complete 3" system too.

Oh, and for duals, keep it at 2.5".

well then. i guess thats settled. are there any preformance headers that fit a 4.7??? and ive seen the x-pipe set up work it is just reallllly funkie and out of the ordinary. im pretty hell bent on dual tips but dumping them before the axel seems pretty smart and so does some of your other suggestions

an X pipe really needs equal length piping from both cyl banks to do it's job (and to sound right). The location of the oil pan and all of the other factors that make that area tight (especially the transfer case) really prevent that from being doable. Dreamer on here (aka Hannes) had a great shop weld up a H pipe setup to exit on each side, and even then, the route of the piping was just a mess. For what its worth, once he heard my setup in person, he went back to the shop, removed the true duals, and copied my exhaust.

I'm telling you all this because I've been there, I spent alot of money on exhaust work trying to get what I wanted.

Re: Exhaust

Young Gun: email to Kolak@aol.com to discuss a proven exhaust system for the WJ. He has long experience with selling these, and has custom fabricated mandrel bent piping for the runs. Sleepy is correct...not worth trying to run a dual exhaust. Hang a separate tip on the driver's side to give you the "look"!

, I'll never spend another penny with Kolak, his system was junk and it took a month to get the right parts from him. Buy the summit system, replace the muffler with one you really want, and enjoy.

Re: Exhaust

I have not had that same experience, and have bought several systems from him over the last ten years or so. We each have our own experiences!
