Exhuast questions

Powedercoating an aluminum exhaust...Can it be done?

I want a black exhaust, and MBRP sells them black already but they are pricey

I was wondering if i just bought the aluminum set up, had it powdercoated, would it hold up to rust and the temp from the exhaust?

Does anyone have an MBRP exhaust on this board? How bad is the drone? Should I go with gibson instead because it has a reso?

Also, down the road, if i were to get headers and cats, would they bolt right up to the exhaust or will i need to modify it? I asked American racing and they said it would, but i dont understand how increasing the header size will make it able to bolt right up.

Any good pictures of the undercarriage I can see?

Re: Exhuast questions

i dont believe you can. if you are powder coating something that is going to get very hot it isn't a great idea.

Re: Exhuast questions

I'd stay away from powder coating the exhaust especially the headers. JetHot coat them black.

Re: Exhuast questions

You want the complete exhaust powdercoated black? I do not know enough about powder coating and it with standing high temps, but, if you are doing it just for the rusting issues and want to use aluminum I would just paint it yourself with a high temp engine enamel or similar, and save yourself alot of money. No one will even see your exhaust except for the tip anyways. I had the stock srt exhaust installed on my Laredo which I believe is stainless steel, and the installer ended up putting in a section of aluminum pipe where I deleted the muffler, so I got under there and coated the pipe with a can of the high temp engine enamel and it still looks brand new. I sprayed all the welds with it also, and so far so good. I bought the rust inhibiting high temp primer to use first on the parts.

I painted my old PowerStick with that stuff and it worked great!

Re: Exhuast questions

I just read this article, and it made me want to replace the section of aluminum pipe I have installed with stainless steel. It says the aluminum pipe can still deteriorate from the inside even though I painted the exterior, which makes sense. That Jet-Hot appears to coat the insides as well as the outside.

Re: Exhuast questions

I had a powder coated Edelbrock intake on my 351c but if I was doing an exhaust i'd just use some high temp paint.
