flowmaster Delta 50 on 4.7L WK

so... she has been installed...

#1 It has a little bit of a ....flutter?.... when it is cruising. It's interresting, but the drone flutters, almost as if the motor is running funny.

#2... wow the drone is annoying... i got a Delta 50 to NOT have drone! it loves my favorite speed/RMP combo... 80MPH at 2K RPM.

anyone have any advice? should i not be experiencing the drone?

Just a note because im bitching... i LOVE the sound, and the drone is completely worth it! The v8 finally sounds like one!

Re: flowmaster Delta 50 on 4.7L WK

The 4.7 is fairly drone-happy, and the flowmasters do not help. But, if you're happy, you're happy.

Re: flowmaster Delta 50 on 4.7L WK

In my exprience all flowmasters drone. I always suggest the hooker aerochamber to anyone who wants the sound of a chambered muffler and the performance of a straight through muffler without any real serious drone. I think it is what it is bro. Learn to love the drone is all I can say to you. The only other advice to to add some insulation inside the jeep right over where the muffler is if possible and to add some insulation in the trunk area as that big empty trunk space serves to work as a resonator.

Re: flowmaster Delta 50 on 4.7L WK

Do the Thrush chambered mufflers drone like flowmasters, too? Have been tossing around the idea. I have a couple 3" flowmasters and am tempted to put one of them on, but if it sounds anything like that crappy magnaflow that's on there, gonna drive the damn thing off a cliff, lol....The guy at the muffler shop was telling me the flowmaster sounded real good on these, but I don't want to experiment

How bad is this drone? How about the rest of the rpm range? I know the 5.7 and 4.7 sound different, but I bet there's some similarity.

BTW - the 50 is a 3-chamber, correct? I'm not familiar with their new numbers and used to the 80's-90's designations, I guess (in my mind for sound/level, etc.)

Re: flowmaster Delta 50 on 4.7L WK

Yeah, and it sucks that happens to be cruising speed too Where is your exhaust tip, btw? I noticed on my gvr4 when the tip was not protruding beyond the bumper end, it had much worse drone (doesn't use flowmaster and totally different animal, but the SS muffler is similar to an oval glasspack or magnaflow); then when I extended it beyond the end of the bumper, it helped a lot!

Good to know it sounds good at every other range though. I want something that I can hear the notes of the exhaust and not just a hollow fake sound like I have now. Although when I floor it, it sounds pretty good. But, this is not my performance vehicle and I prefer to just cruise.

Just curious, what Magnaflow are you running? I'm a little biased, but the first magnaflow I ran was really disappointing. It wasn't till I went to a much more agressive variant of one that i was truly happy.

The 4.7 and 5.7 both share the same spot for resonance- 2000 rpms. This is not model specific, I see it in WJs, WKs, and Rams as well.

Re: flowmaster Delta 50 on 4.7L WK

To be honest, I'm not too sure the model...it's 2 1/2", polished SS and oval, with a relatively small casing (maybe 9" W x 14" L x 4" D), so you might be right there. My friend had one on his 97 2-door tahoe with 5.7 and I hated the sound; it was worse than mine! However, one of my GTO bretheren had a pair and it was quieter than stock, iirc...Whatever the case, the sound just drives me nuts! I did put a new tip on (was ending where resonator inlet was [removed]) and I swear that added some drone now and it seems louder (not the removing, the new tip and location); weird. I don't want another muffler (resonator) in addition, as that seems pointless (from a performance POV)...Just not sure there's anything I can do with what's on there.

Besides, I do want either a single 3" or dual (side by side) 2 1/2" if I ever get the $

btw - I did not notice much difference, other than a little volume, by removing the resonator, so not sure why everybody says it 'causes' drone? Personally, it seems to have more to do with the muffler type (i.e. glasspack, incl. oval variety, or chamber)...I bet a nice turbo muffler would not have hardly any 'drone'. The 'drone', if you want to call it that, is not the part that I don't like with what I have; it's just the lack of any real notes of the engine and just sounding artificial to my ear...then again, I think I spoiled myself with my other vehicles I've had and gotta remember this is not a high performance engine.

Re: flowmaster Delta 50 on 4.7L WK

I love my Borla is all I can say. Mine is on a 4.0L granted but it is what I would calla gentlemens exhaust. Loud when you want it to be and moderate at most cruising speeds.

If the Borla is to steep for you then I would HIGHLY suggest the Hooker Aero Chamber line of mufflers if you wan the nice rumble of chambered exhaust with the performance of straight through mufflers. I loved the sound on my 88 Trans-Am, my 94 Formula, the 96 Dodge(this was before I went to a MUCH louder FM40 delta which droned like all get out but sounded good). They are very well made mufflers and hold up well. According to the Hooker rep I spoke to their new maximum flow mufflers are quieter at idle but FAR louder under load than the ACs are.

Food for thought. Try something new and I think you will dig the sound much more than anything FM has to offer. FM is just plain LOUD. If loud is all you want then look no further than FM.

The Thrush chambered mufflers are two chambered mufflers and are akin to what FM was selling in the 80s.

Re: flowmaster Delta 50 on 4.7L WK

makes sense about the thrush, plus IIRC they are not SS either...I hear good things about borla, albeit expensive (in that you pay for some of the name)...I remember when aero chambers came out and came close to getting them instead of flowmasters on my 'velle. However, no matter what I put on that car it would be loud and rumbly (aggressive cam) I just want decent volume (not loud) and good, crisp sound without buying 3 different setups, lol.

Woops, sorry to get this post sidetracked!

Re: flowmaster Delta 50 on 4.7L WK
