iro exhaust

http://www.ironrockoffroad.com/Merch...egory_Code=WPA

what do you guys think of this exhaust? i know kolak sells pretty much the exact same thing but his is more expensive.

what i was thinking about doing was a complete 3 inch exhaust from the y pipe back, i don't have a cat after the y pipe because i have a late 04 model of the 4.7L

any advice or ideas would be great

thanks.

Re: iro exhaust

I have a 3" setup from the Y back, was one of the best mods I've done yet.

Looks to me like they copied the Kolak design. My Kolak 3" tailpipe is exactly the same. I'd go with IRO.

I'd avoid buying the mufflers they sell however, just because the late '04s have a nasty resonance issue. What you should probably do is get a Magnaflow 6" round bullet muffler, and then a 5x8x14 or a 5x8x18 to go behind the bullet muffler.

How aggressive of a sound are you looking for?

One other thing, if the piping is as thin as the Kolak piece, you're gonna wanna coat it before installing it. I had significant rust (deeper than surface) after 4 months in Florida. Hannes has had great success with Duplicolor engine enamel, but I personally use VHT flameproof. You can coat it afterwards, but it's a little difficult to do a clean job under the truck.

Re: iro exhaust

Thanks a lot Sleepy, I've been wanting to do this mod for a while now. I don't really mind what it sounds like as long as it's deeper and louder than it is now, and as long as there isn't much drone, so I probably will do what you said to do with the bullet muffler before the actual muffler.

Were there any other parts that you needed to purchase to make everything fit and work together with the kolak exhaust? for example, connectors or extra piping and such?

Its a mod that definitely needs to be done.

Here is what I did on my '02.

Thunderbolt metallic precats to replace my OEM precats
Spread the Y opening to 3"
3" piping to Thunderbolt metallic 3rd cat (piping was supplied by my exhaust guy)
Magnaflow 4x14 bullet-style muffler (Believe the part number is 14459)
3" Kolak tailpipe

The tailpipe was 140 shipped, the cats were 63 bucks each (3 of them total so 189 + shipping) the muffler I bought used with about 2000 miles on it for 35 bucks, and the labor was 60 bucks for my exhaust guy to weld it all up. (We have history so he cut me a big break, you should expect about double that). The gains were noticeable and although it took alot of tweaking to get my setup to be what I wanted , if I had to do it again it wouldn't be all that costly to do.

The only thing I actually purchased from Nick was the tailpipe.

Re: iro exhaust

The precats that you replaced are the ones before the Y pipe correct? Being that my car was made past midyear in 04, i don't have any cats after the Y pipe, I don't know exactly why this is or why Jeep did this, but they did.

Most 4.7 WJs have the precats, the ones that do have 2 before the Y, so yes. the 3rd cat is considered the "main" converter. I never understood the change either, I do know however that the late 04 precats are not the same material as the 3 cat model precats. They don't flow as well either.

Paul, when you get a second, please take a look at my thread regarding the K&N FIPK. I need help from someone who has it.
