Looking for a simplified explination of Suspension system mods

Hello All,

I see that there's some awesome information on this site, but I'm having a bit trouble putting it all together. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 05 Grand Cherokee 5.7

I'm mainly looking to improve ride comfort and sound, improve responsiveness is a plus but not required.

I'm looking to put some money (upto $700/800 including installation) into the suspension system (shocks/struts or both) and am looking to find where my money will go the furthest.

So the first question is what parts should be first on my list to upgrade, shocks, struts, springs, sway bar...

The 2nd question is, out of those parts which ones can I install myself (I'm aware shocks are pretty simple). I have never played with suspension systems, but I'm usually good at figuring things out. In the past I've changed my oil, and rear diff lube (just to give you and idea of my level of experience).

Scottina06, from what I've read you seem like the Yoda of suspension systems. Your guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you ahead of time for your help,
IU Jeep

Welcome to JG bro. I can ony recommend products I have used...so Ill do the best I can. The best shocks/struts for the money is the WK Bilsteins HD's(www.tirerack.com, shox.com or shockswarehouse.com) They will raise your WK 3/8" all around. Koni also has a new set up, but Ive never used them or know anyone that has. There is alos the SRT Bilsteins...but they are like $800.

If you want to replace the springs...theer are a couple options. The oem SRT Jeep springs, SRT Eibachs, WK Eibachs and Bwoodys(SRT) and H&R. I had the WK Eibachs and they give a very small drop with the WK Bilsteins.(maybe 1") Much better ride, comfort etc. The SRT Eibachs abd Bwoodys give an extreme 2.75-3" drop. The H&R's drop about 1.5-1.75 "...but a little higher in the rear.

For sway bars i recommend the oEM SRT sway bars...front and rear. they are direct fit on all WK's. You only need the bars, bushings and brackets for install on a WK. I also recommend the Bwoody perfromance WK sway links. They are direct fit on the WK, much beefier etc. Dont get them mixed up with the Bwoody SRT sway links...they are different. Hope that helps...and iff you have any more questions...please dont hesitate to post. There are tons of helpful and knowledgable members here.

FYI-you can install all of these yourself with helpful how-to's from out how to forum if you have the correct tools.

shocks bilsteins.

front shocks require removal and opening of the strut. if you can do that yourself, then you can do the rest of it.

It will get a little expensive when you do it all at once, but it will be worth it.

Depending on what you want to do, lift or drop or remain close to stock, call a few scrap yards.

I got Shocks and springs from a junked srt8 jeep with 2400 miles on it for about 400 shipped. If you are trying to save, just get the rear sway bar kit, there isnt much of a difference in the front. Also, get the bwoody wk endlinks. Mike is a good guy and you can probably pick up a set for 200 or less shipped.

And as mentioned, you can do all this yourself, dont be afraid, follow instructions and you will get the hang of it.

Re: Looking for a simplified explination of Suspension system mods

I'll throw my 2 cents in here.

Since you said "ride comfort" i would suggest only the struts and shocks. Bilstein's are the overwhelming choice around here but the Koni's look promising, but i'd bet they will come at a bit of a price premium. If you run any kind of lowering spring you will gain some stiffness to the ride that you may not like. The rear shocks are a basic jackstand, ratchet and wrench job but the front will need a bit more experience and comfort taking apart compressed suspension pieces.

I've done all the work on my jeep myself and have done it all in steps. I'll give you the order and my opinions of each.

Springs first(Eibach for regular WK)-helped a bit but still found the ride too bouncy
Struts next(eibach)-helped significantly and took alot of the bounce out, but really showed how bad the rear was
Rear shocks (Eibach)-really helped button down the rear and got the ride to a point that i was happy with it.
New springs (Eibach for SRT-8)-got the truck lowered to the point i was happier and stiffened the ride which i personally like
SRT-8 sway bars front and rear-honestly didn't notice a big difference, really just barely enough to notice
NEXT PLANNED UPGRADE-Bwoody endlinks. Everyone raves about them and i am hoping they will bring the roll stiffness up to a point i will be happy with.

SOOOO, if i were you-Struts,Shocks and the Bwoody endlinks are the first upgrades i'd make and would fit the budget perfectly. Then decide what you want form there.

Thanks guys! I have always though it was the purpose of a site like this is to share opinions (and remember that they are just that, individual opinions) about a particular subject.

Re: Looking for a simplified explination of Suspension system mods

I'll be installing Bwoodies on stock bars this week, as others say the difference is very noticable without SRT bars. Am still deciding on what shocks and struts to get. I called Tokico, and they are not yet available for WK; Koni is what I orignally wanted and just got prices on them from Jegs, at $ 219 each, per shock. Yikes, but lifetime warrantee, These also have a slower, and adjustable rebound, so would expect less bouncy of a ride.
