yuo K&N 63 is for the 3.7(some odd reason they didnt lose the box on the 3.7.....he has the 4.7.

That box is called the intake resonator/muffler

Re: Stock Air box thingy removed! Ghetto style w/ pics

I've thought about keeping the stock airbox and doing something kinda similar on my 3.7L... by using the tube from a 3.7L Liberty. But I haven't figured out if the throttle bodies are the same size. I could always just swap them from my sister's Liberty *but* she will have a heart attack if I start disassembling her Jeep. Resonators are evil.

Re: Stock Air box thingy removed! Ghetto style w/ pics

Ok Todays driving update. I drove my jeep for about 3 hours today, Hwy at 75mpg and in city/stop and go as well as back road and passing.

Left home, drove to highway and on the on ramp i noticed ( i am the type that merges at hwy speed not 40 mph) that the throttle is much nicer and more responsive.

The exhaust is much nicer sounding and a bit louder, and deeper.

The city driving was nice and its deff got a great rumble now and i thought it was good before.

Finally i was on a back road thats a 40mph and got stuck behind a volvo doing 30. They finally pulled over and let me pass, and i kinda rhomped on it as i passed them an OMFG it sounds so good now!!!

So far so good, great free mod. All i need to do now is get a piece of silicone tube or aluminum tube thats 3.5" OD, with a 90* bend and thats 9" long from the center of the opening after teh 90* bend, paint and install and it will look SEXY!!!!

Nice work, I'm sure the home depot would have what your looking for. I've seen it cai's made out of 3"pvc pipe. They make TONS of fittings and adapters for pvc. And I think you meant to type 75MPH, not MPG. Otherwise you have have just become a billionaire with your invention.

Yes i meant to say MPH. LOL

At this point i am not going to change it any more. If this Bwoody intake for the 4.7 works out i am going to sell my AFE (its alreadya for sale on JU and JF, I will post it here as well) and just get the Bwoody intake, what i always wanted any way.

Re: Stock Air box thingy removed! Ghetto style w/ pics

Wow, that is pretty ghetto, but it works right? For some reason removing that intake muffler thingy really made a huge difference in performance, looks and exhaust tone/sound.

Here is what the inside looks like. You can see where the holes are in the resonator.

Re: Stock Air box thingy removed! Ghetto style w/ pics

Yea, i took a look at mine when i took it out. I just dont get why its needed at all. The Xj never had one on the 4.0 but i guess they added one on the wjs with the 4.0, but the tj never got one on the 4.0 and that went till 06.

Just like back in the day of the Xj, where the stock plenum meets the stock air box, there is a cone there that decreases the diameter of the air tube before the plenum. apparently it was there to reduce flow and Hp, That is the first mod that any new xj owner removed, it took 1 min and a flat screw driver to pull it out and throw it in the trash.

Manufactureers do all kinds of stuff to reduce HP for some odd reason. LIke the 4.0, 190 hp, wtf. that engine is tuned just slightly different from the factory could easily put out 230 hp and still have more torque then any other 6 cyl like it does now.

makes me wonder what else they did to the 4.7 to reduce its Hp.

What did they do different when they "new' 4.7 came out in 08 with more Hp?

Re: Stock Air box thingy removed! Ghetto style w/ pics

Yeah i don't get it. I had a 98 Oldsmobile Intrigue and that whole intake system was convoluted and just overall awful. Motor probably gasped for air under normal situations let alone if you had a dirty filter. After removing it and putting in a straight SLP intake, I could not only burn rubber all day but the engine roared like a beast and actually sounded awesome. GM probably did what they did to keep it nice and quiet with a smooth acceleration, which of course how it was.
