Stock Air box thingy removed! Ghetto style w/ pics

Well after getting my AFE intake and i was disapointed to see that it did not remove the stock air box thingy (what ever its called) I also did not really notice that much of a difference in the throttle response at all. So i pondered and pondered. I decided i would make my own plenum tube to connect the throttle body to the AFE intkae plenum.

Well to my dispair i have no money right now as i have no work.

Long story short, i was bored and about 45 mins ago i went out to the jeep and played with some stuff.

Using the stock ribbed plenum, i was able to connect that from the throttle body to the AFE plenum. Then i drilled a hole and put the air sensor back in.

Now there is HUGE difference in throttle response and it idles better. Once i get some cash i will re do this with some nice silicone tube and couplers but for now this works prefect. The AFE Dry S Filter actually sounds like its working now and it feels peppier.

EDIT: YES i know the engine is dirty and a disgrace but i have not had any decent weather or chemicals to try and get it as shiny as Joe's engine bay.

Re: Stock Air box thingy removed! Ghetto style w/ pics

Wow kyle!!! I was thinking about selling my AFE to get a k/n system just for kicks and try to see what the deal was without the plenum resonator on there. Very clever and innovative. I might actually do something like this very shortly cause i also wanted to kill that resonator. Stay tuned.

I still have the original setup of course

Re: Stock Air box thingy removed! Ghetto style w/ pics

The only thing you have to do is make a spacer for the TB. The Throttle body is 3.25 not 3.5. BUT the stock box has a spacer on it where it mounts to the TB. If you take that spacer off, remove the band clamp, then cut out the inside ring it will fit right on to the TB. Then you slide on the old plenum, drill the 1/2 hole in the plenum (see my pic) for the air sensor and your done. Too all of 45 mins to do and that was creating it, prolly can be done in 20mins.

If you need more specific help doing it om me. Seriously it should not even take you 30 mins to do it. So worth it.

LOL, I just noticed that you can finally tell that i painted the strut bar Dark khaki. Now i need to sand it down some and re paint it and not rush it so i dont have those marks on the top from the hood insulation.

Re: Stock Air box thingy removed! Ghetto style w/ pics

What's involved in taking off the 4.7 cover? Just a couple screws? I assume that is the "resonator"? I wonder if the stock flex tubing would reach by itself.

Re: Stock Air box thingy removed! Ghetto style w/ pics

No the stock tubing will not fit. from the TB to the stock air box.

All thats involved in removing it. (maybe i will do a write up with full pics tomorrow. )

With AFE or similar CAI,

Remove the plenum band clamp from the plenum where it attached to the air intake resonator.

Using a 10mm socket remove the 2 bolts that hold the resonator to the intake manifold. One on each side.

Then loosen the Band clamp on the TB can unplug the air sensor.

Remove the resonator and set aside.

Next take the stock plenum with the ribs and with the narrow ribbed end in your left hand make sure that the bend of the plenum is going to match the bend from the intake to the TB.

Now take the stock resonator, where it attached to the TB there is a rubber reducer ring. Take it off the resonator and look at it. It has 2 layers. Carefully take a razor knife and cut the out side layer off the smaller inside layer. Clean up the edged and place this small ring on the TB. Now the Stock ribbed plenum tube will fit the TB like it should.

Take the ribbed plenum and where the narrower ribed end is locate the thicker portion of it near the band clamp. on the side of the thicker portion, CAREFULLY drill a 1/2" hole. The hole will not come out perfect, so the sharper the better.

Take a knife or razor blade and clean up the hole and shake out all shavings.

Now take the ribbed plenum and attach the opposite end you drilled to the TB.

Next take the remaining end and attach it to the Air intake's Plenum.

Once both band clamps are tight CAREFULLY insert the air sensor from the old resonator in to the 1/2 hole you drilled. (it should be a tight fit)

NOTE: make sure when installing the air sensor that the sensor's flat side is perpendicular to the ground. So when air flows over it if flows through the wires and not over it (up and down not flat) plug in sensor.

Go drive you jeep.

I will take pics tomorrow between rain drops and maybe this can be stickied under the performance mods section.
