What do you think she'll run???

Okay gang, I'm bored sitting here in VA (Bubba and Richie where y'all at lol) and browsing through 1/4 mile times with the mods different members have done for power increases and whatnot and am wondering.......

What is everybody's general opinion on what my old Niner will run in the 1/4 mile once I get the engine build done, especially if I'm realistically pushing 450 hp at the crank and, with a very beefed up tranny with a stall converter in the 2500-2800 rpm range? I just keep going back to Bubba, since he has a Niner as well and ran a 13.46 cranking out 380 hp (pun intended), with his Saine tranny, 3,000 billet stall, and all his other mods. I'm thinking that I should turn at least a little bit of a faster time with the additional power I'll be pushing; around a 13-flat would be very nice depending on my reaction time. I can only hope since I've never ran the track before......

To recap, here's the very basic build/mod list again:

-Stroked from 360 CID to 408 CID.

-Cam with a 226/234 or possibly even a 258/268 profile.

-Aluminum Heads.

-1.6 Roller rockers.

-Hardened racing push rods.

-Coated Headers and full, "X" dual exhaust system.

-CAI.

-Beefed up 46RE Race/Performance Transmission and Stall Converter in 2500-2800 range.

-SCT Tune after build complete.

Let the games begin! 13 seconds for sure but high or low, I dunno.

What do the XJ's weigh?

If it's similiar to the wk's then you should be able to pull a 12.8 or 12.9. ALOT depends on the gear ratio's you'll be running and the stall.

The first cam you listed would be a nice street cam for 400+ cubic inch displacement and would match up nicely with a 25-2800 rpm stall. If you run the bigger cam, which will be OK with the 408 and be a great street/strip cam, you'll definately want a looser stall. Somewhere around 33-3600 rpm.

Smaller cam and stall, stock gears-13.2 ish
bigger cam and stall, stock gears--12.9 ish

4.10 gears--drop 2-3 tenths

Just my slightly educated opinion.

Carlo, you will be in the 12's. I got a 318 ZJ in the 12's with As-cast Eddy Heads, a built trans, 4.56s, a KRC 210X camshaft and a SCT tune. It was running down SRT8 WK's with intake, exhaust, and CMR tunes.

Make sure your engine builder uses a cam profile with fast ramps and a tight Lobe Separation.

Thanks for everyone's replies so far! The one thing I could see being a small issue is that I'm keeping the stock 3.73 rears. I want to have some sort of decent daily drive-ability lol

Ryan, 12's would blow my mind bro!!! I know you've made mention of the 5.2 running 12's to me many times in the past... May I please ask what all did you do to it besides what you mentioned above? Honestly if I can be down in the low 13's I'll probably still be grinning ear to ear!

I just know above all else concerning waking up our old Magnum motors you (and several others) have pounded one thing into my head.......

HEADS AND CAM!!!

:D

Carlo, drivability with a certain kind of gear is a function of tire size...the ZJ in question was a DD.

I'm not kidding you, it had nothing else but the below...Here was the setup to the nth degree:

318, stock shortblock
Eddy heads ....AS CAST
KRC 210X cam, stock valvetrain with Mopar .600 springs and Trickflow pushrods
AEM brute force intake
Fastman 52mm TB
Mopar 4bbl M1 with 2 bbl adapter
Level 10 built trans with stock converter
Addco swaybars
SCT tune with Dynojet Wideband, tunes done by Sean Powell aka HEMIFEVER
Side exhaust with 3" piping, Flowmaster 50 (run a magnaflow round muffler instead), no cat

when you get time, you give me a call...I want to hear all the nitty gritty details.

edit: I would recommend the KRC 408X cam....you'll have an absolute MONSTER on your hands...Don't listen to anyone recommending you garbage from hughes...

I'm just going with the knowledge of the rpm range in my big truck and gearing (I know, I know can't really compare gas vs. diesel). E.G., my current truck has 3.36 rears and turns a measley 1550-1600 rpm @ 70-75 mph, whereas the last truck with the same engine, same ECM programming, and 3.70 rears turned between 1650-1700 in the same speed range. And when you're driving in the neighborhood of 3,000 miles a week that adds up in the fuel consumption department!

Ryan, I don't think I have your # bro! Right now I don't have all the specifics concerning manufacturers, just know that from getting to know Stan and with his resume he seems very knowledgeable and understanding of what I want out of this build project. I can't wait, just have to get all of the $$$ together, and unfortunately Mr. Murphy has been rearing his ugly head A LOT lately and I must keep pushing my project back :(

But anytime I start thinking that I'll just rebuilding back to stock (because it's killing me not to drive my Niner dammit!) I make sure to run head first into a brick wall to remind myself that I'm not settling for stock performance or second best anymore!

BTW, just a quick note concerning my current engine woes, the next time I'm home and IF I can get her started up I'll try to take video of it so you and the other knowledgeable gang on here can HEAR THE ENGINE and see what my problem may be...... All I can get is that the sound (hard knocking that fluctuates up and down according to the rpms) comes from the upper section of the engine, seems to be isolated in the intake manifold area I believe, and once the engine gets around 4,000 rpm my Jeep dies! All fluids are good everywhere and like I said when this first happened, I was on the interstate running about 70 when I noticed the tranny had dropped down to "2", my rpms went sky high, the temp shot up into the red zone, and next thing I knew I was coasting onto the shoulder!
