What mods do you recommend?

For the next 6-8 weeks, I will be suffering through the waiting process for my new jeep. In the meantime, we're keeping the '01 Grand Cherokee LTD. Having never done any kind of mod before, this forum has given me the bug. I'd like to start with my old one before i do anythjng to the new one. Where do I start?

Hey Boom! I'm so sorry. I didn't see that anyone had actually replied to me. I drive my jeeps like race cars on the street but actually take it off road. I see all sorts of things about "catch cans" (which nobody in my dealership's service department has ever heard of), cold air intakes, exhaust, and tuners.

I'd like to play around with doing some mods to my '01 as my "proving grounds" before I mess with anything on my '14. I'd also like to improve my suspension and handling but don't really want to do a lift on it. I haven't seen a lift on my body style that didn't look ridiculous.

So I guess I'm open to anything but would like to start simple.

Re: What mods do you recommend?

What motor do you have? 4.0 or 4.7?

4.7 just had one of the heads replaced. So... 3yr 100k warranty on 1/3 of my engine. LOL!

Just replaced my tires with Nitto Terra Grapplers (yesterday). Haven't really done anything to test them but they're a big improvement from stock.

Re: What mods do you recommend?

There is a long list of good mods for the 4.7 but they can get expensive. Cheap mods would be 3" cat-back exhaust, K&N CAI, and maybe an SCT tune by Flyin Ryan. Suspension wise, alot of people run bilstein shocks with addco sway bars front and rear. You should also check into getting a catch can because these motors are known for gunk in the manifold.

Not performance related per se, but I'd suggest HID headlights. It's the one thing I'm probably most happy that I did.

I agree with everything Justin said except the sct handheld is almost impossible to find rite now. Wich a good tune on these 4.7s is key.

Well, I can't seem to find a tuner. So if you guys know where I can get the right one, please let me know. Having never used one, i have no idea what to look for.

I have a K&N drop-in filter in the existing intake but no noticeable difference in gas or performance. Would the complete CAI make a difference without the tuner? Someone also said that none of the above would make any difference without an exhaust. I was hoping to make little improvements when I can, but am worried I won't get anything noticeable without breaking the bank all at once.

Regarding the HIDs, any recommendations on those? I'd love to have some cooler headlights but have been gun shy about changing my stock ones because they're SO much brighter than my girlfriend's Chevy Equinox.

Lastly, can ANYONE give me a definitive resource about catch cans? I'd never heard of one before joining this forum and now can't seem to find a single mechanic who's ever heard of one either. I googled it and basically understand what it does. But why doesn't anyone know what this is?

Re: What mods do you recommend?

CAI's make a difference pretty much only with a tuner(besides the badass sound it makes). After market headlights are a mod that most people do. I was running an 8000K HID and it was very bright. I would get new headlights if your going with HID's. Halo Projector Headlights, Euro Headlights, Altezza Tail Lights, LED Tail Lights, Turbo Downpipe, Wheel Spacers - ProTuningLab.com has headlights that are prefit with HID's. I think catch cans are just starting to get noticed. Iv heard the new SRT's will be equipped with them from the factory. I ran an EBay can on my K&N CAI. Maybe Boom could post a pic of it since he has it now and I no longer have pics of it lol

Would LOVE to see some photos!! Those headlights look killer! So who can tell me where to get a tuner? Sounds like nothing I do will matter without it. :-)

Re: What mods do you recommend?

You can try contacting FlyinRyan directly. I know they are scarce and hard to find! Here is my '99 that I had with the aftermarket headlights.
