Re: V-LEDs premium digital 5000K HID kit as reverse lights

Bringing this to the top bud!

How are these holding up? I'm wanting to throw an auxilary switch on the reverse lights instead of mounting up aftermarket lighting.

Will I be able to do the HID retrofit, have it switched, and still have the tails hold up with the heat? I'm thinking like 10-20 minutes of runtime.

I'm also considering simple 63 LED bulbs as a cheap, low power consumption option versus the HID power consumption.

They're holding up great! I've thought about wiring them up to a switch as well. I've had my lights on for about 5 minutes at most and haven't had a problem. I know HIDs run cooler than halogen headlight bulbs but I'm not sure about the temp of smaller incan bulbs like the stock reverse bulbs. Once I find where I put the stock reverse bulbs and sockets I'm going to bench test those and some spare HID bulbs I have to see the temperature difference. I'll report back with my findings.

I thought about going the LED route and while the LED reverse bulbs are very bright to look at, they don't project the amount of light I was after.

Re: V-LEDs premium digital 5000K HID kit as reverse lights

Good to hear!

Guess I'll start researching the switch idea further! I think I will go the LED route first and see how if I get the output I'm looking for. If not then sell the LED's and go HID... no biggie!

Any further thoughts on the switch?

From what I understand there is a red power wire in the harness to the tail. Somehow have to tandem switch the bulb...

You'll need a relay.

The numbers above are the different pins on a relay.

85: Ground
30: Constant 12V direct from the battery
86: This will "Y" out into two leads. One goes to the 12V wire for the OEM backup bulb, the other will go to your switch, which is also connected to 12v. You can have this be a switched 12V or direct from the battery.
87: 12V input on your HID ballast or LED bulb

If you want to run one relay for both ballasts/bulbs (left and right) then pin 87 will output to each one so you'll have two wires coming off of it.

Thanks!

I will be doing this soon. I know it is recommended to have the vehicle running when HIDs are energized although they work fine when the engine is off as well but stress the ballasts. I'm wondering how fast they would drain the battery if left on without the engine running.

Well HIDs are actually more efficient than halogens. Your standard 9005 bulb draws 55 watts while [standard] HIDs draw only 35 while running (they require more for initial start-up). As long as your battery outputs 12 volts, you'll be fine. I can't give you an exact time that they'll last w/o the car running but it'll be longer than normal halogen headlights. Test it and lest us know
