Re: Blacked out emblems

OK. I have no clue if this post is going to go through. For days now, JG has been getting consistently slower and slower. Painfully slow. Now it refuses to load any page unless I make 5 attempts to do so. Anyone wanting the info on this paint, please find my email in my account and contact me there. Sorry.

p.s., no other website, at all, is giving me any trouble. None.

Ron.

Come on Ron... this is what JG is for... sharing personal finds, experiences and lessons so that others can learn from fellow Jeepers. Why wouldn't you post what kind of paint you used? Its not like you really have anything to lose... i'd rather not email a stranger any way haha oh well, kind of selfish if you ask me.

I've painted so many sets of rims I lost count. I'm not joking nor exaggerating. I found what I consider to be the hands-down BEST/STRONGEST/LONGEST-LASTING/AMAZING paint ever. The best example I can give is I put a light coat of this paint on a set of rims that went on my 90 VW Golf. I cleaned the rims with a strong cleanser and steel wool, no primer, then shot a very light coat of paint, in October no less. I let them dry and mounted the tires and drove on them through 3 extreme Michigan winters/summers. Not only that, any time I needed to remove a rim, I tossed it around like it was the spare donut. I basically treated these wheels like crap. Shot them with high-pressure wash, caked on brake-dust, etc. Not a chip, fade, nor scratch. Never. The day I sold the car they looked fresh-painted(3 years later). These were Ronal brand honeycomb style rims. A friend who laughed at me the whole time for using a "rattle can" had the BBS rims on his Trans-Am GTA professionally painted at the same time as his car(matching blue inserts, chrome lip), and not even 1 year later, they looked like crappola. I've tried a few times to start a discussion about this brand of paint on JeepGarage, but no one seemed interested, so I guess this will remain my little secret! lol Seriously, anyone considering a mod that includes painting something, specially exterior pieces that see a lot of abuse, let me know. Message me and I'll let you in on the info. Or you can search my posts and try to find it. Maybe plus rep for the first one to post the answer?
I actually started looking but I was over it quick hahaha. Fess up...whats your brand?.. My paint job is just over a year old. I just used Dupicolor engine paint.

Maybe not to you, but there was some chatter about it on a different thread, maybe the post-whoring one(T.A.A.T.). I suppose it's my Korean IP address. LOTS of sites don't like it. There is one site that won't let me on at all, and through emails with the site owner, it's because all Korean IP's are blocked from their site.

1st. You need to realize the lol in a text/forum message usually means "joke" or "humour". 2nd. You didn't read far enough. I stated clearly that I had already tried spreading this info a few times. I even posted a photo to easily identify the brand, where it was sold, everything. No one seemed interested. I don't think there was even one response or acknowledgment, so I thought it would be best to leave it to those interested enough to pm or email me for the info.

Engine paint is for high-heat applications. That doesn't mean it is a tougher paint, just that it can withstand high temps.

The short answer would be:
Tamiya brand paints out of Japan, and available worldwide. It's a hobbyist's paint used on RC cars/trucks/planes/boats, so you can understand why it has to be so tough. It comes in almost every color you can think of, and almost every shade is available as flat, satin, gloss, or even metallic. Also every shade is usually available as a bottle/brush on and spray.

Members from all over the world can start their search from here: http://www.tamiya.com/

In the USA, any hobby shop should have it.

Image:

Most of the spray cans are small, but every once in a while, I saw full sized cans. It is a little pricier but worth every penny.
It's pretty much what I use exclusively when I'm painting car parts, exterior pieces, bikes, etc.

Re: Blacked out emblems

Yea I used to mess around with some rc and model stuff so I reckonized the brand when I saw the picture. I got the engine paint because besides the high heat, it's made to handle the dirt, grease, and grime that gets on engines also. But I may search out some Tamiya for my next project.

Hey, I'm not knocking the plasti-dip, I just never used it. I'm as interested as anyone else here in it's longevity. I'm only wondering about the lack of colors.

Re: Blacked out emblems

I had a look at Plasti Dip's UK site and you're right about the lack of colour. However they do have a mixing kit, but I'm kinda wary about mixing my own paint. Especially if I ever had to do a repair or anything.

Re: Blacked out emblems

Yes yes, I have been on the hunt for rubicon rims to shoot flat black but no luck. My Ronin II rims are close to getting shot. I am just on the fence about doing them matte or flat black because they are def sweet stock rims. I just feel like flat black would flow so much better with my WK. I am sure I will be hanging with OBXJeep one weekend this summer/spring and all it will take is a few beers and some peer preasure to make me spray them. But thats what big cousins are for right? Haha.
