Carbon Fibre Vinyl...work has begun

Finally got to work with some the vinyl I bought recently. Done the A pillars, part of the steering wheel and the rear step cover. Couldn't remove the step cover as there is a huge piece of steel in the way (part of the towbar setup), so I had to do it freehand. All in all, quite happy with the results. Not sure about the steering wheel though, may change it. Want to do the liftgate hinges next. Think that would look good once my winows are tinted in a couple of weeks.

Anyway enjoy the pics guys and as always, opinions welcome, good or bad:D

Cheers guys. I really appreciate the kind words. I've done a bit more trimming as some of the backing paper was showing in some parts, so it looks a lot better now.

I really enjoyed doing this, despite it being a fiddly job and I'm really pleased with the results. Got a couple more areas on the exterior to do, so hopefully they'll turn out just as good.

Rob - no, WJ's don't have the grab handles on the pillars, so it's a real easy job. I did mine first as a practice run. I found that the drivers side pillar needed re stretched a few days later as there were some air bubbles in it. I think this may be down to me driving around with the window down (I could be wrong) but it was easy fixed.

The rear step cover, didn't need an adhesion promoter after all. Stuck down no probs. That said, one harsh winter may prove me wrong.

But I'm really happy with the outcome and I'm glad you guys like it too, cause that means a lot.

I think that looks pretty freaking good Aaron!

Rear cover/step thing looks great, and the little hinges for the rear glass would look good too.

A-pillars and steering wheel look great too, but I just don't know if the wood fits in anymore... It's a bit chalk and cheese if you know what I mean, old vs. new... I think if you done all the internal wooden trim, it'd look even tighter and OEM.

Yeah Marty, that's why I'm not too sure about the wheel. I kinda look at it and go 'yeah' and then the next minute I'm not sure. Just doesn't go with the wood. Trouble is, I love my wood (the trim in the Jeep that is:eek:) I just don't know if I could cover it all. I've seen some horible woods that I'd cover in a heartbeat, but I like the one I've got.

That looks sick, bro! Definitely keep that steering wheel. It's just right, not too much, but different enough to notice!

How's life in the U.K.?
Thanks Ron:thumbsup: Yeah I like the steering wheel, but I agree with Marty about it not quite being right with the wood, so I'm still in two minds. I've got plenty left so I may see what it looks like with the wood all covered.

Life is good over here but we've just had the Government announce it's emergency budget and VAT has gone up to 20%

How's things with you guys?

I'm seriously considering giving it a go myself.
I say go for it man! Nothing to lose at all (well except some a little cash on vinyl if you need to buy more) and if you decide you don't like it you can peel it off no problems.

If it was me I'd do; wood on doors, wood on dash and the armrest - sure I saw someone on here do one... Although like you I love wood and covering it would be painful, but IDK about having both...

Nah man! Soju is more plentiful than water here. Your bottle is safe.

I saw the armrest Marty, yeah it was sweet. I nearly wrapped mine but I didn't have a piece big enough to cover it. Great minds definately think alike Marty. I'll cover all the wood if it looks bad, then it's no biggy to lose £20 worth of vinyl. I'm gonna try doing the liftgate hinges tomorrow and try the window mouldings too. I'm also thinking about alacantra?! that suede/ carpet stuff I've seen done on that Ukranian Jeep. I'd like to do the headliner too, but no idea how much of a PITA it would be. I really wanna have a unique Jeep. I get a lot of stares as it is, purely cause the V8 ain't that common here. Speaking of which, I smoked an M3 today! Sweet moment
If you have a local fabric store, look for something called Microfiber or Suede Microfiber. It is a synthetic suede. Much sturdier and waaaaaaaay more easy to clean than actual suede(cheaper too). Also available in just about any color.

Good kill on the M3.

Cheers man:thumbsup:. Managed the rear step without a primer or anything. Just stuck straight down...for now anyway. I couldn't get the cover off, because of my tow bar (big steel girder underneath blocking access t the clips) so I've managed to tuck some of the vinyl under the edges. But the rest seems pretty well stuck.

That said a primer may have been a good idea, because getting it to stick between the ridges on the step was a real pain.

I don't know how difficult the headliner would be to remove, although I saw it done on 'Wheeler Dealers' and it looked more difficult to handle than to actually remove from the roof. Just make sure you remove all the lights, handles, pillars etc. :D

A guy on the Volvo forum I was on done his dashboard and erm, center section? (bit where the shifters are LOL), pillars on his 850 T5 in that alacantra stuff and it looked awesome. Really looked classy, he got it done for less than normal though because on of his mates was a trimmer... He said it was pretty easy to keep clean too, although when you touch it you leave a mark just due to the nature of the fabric, rub it the other way and its back to normal.

The headline is not all that bad, as the big hatch in the back lets you remove it from the vehicle fairly easy. Try it in a Coupe or sedan:slapfight: Just remove all the pillar trim and lights etc... not too bad all in all. I have not done a WK, but I did a ZJ to repair the sunroof, and it went fairly smoothly.

Kinda what I was thinking Marty. More prep work than anything else. Really want to get the headliner done, as it's a bit past it's best, plus after seeing the microfibre one on You Tube, it definately looks awesome. The guy had the SRT logo moulded into it as well.

I just read this again... mate, I wish I was there to help you. I've done molded-in flames, a Ram's head, and a few Chevy logos. It would take me an extra 30 minutes to add a 3d logo to your headliner.

also, a little bad news on the soju. It has been delayed a bit. The hag at the post office wouldn't let me send it, even though I've done it before. I just have to wrangle a Korean friend in there with me to translate. All I can do in Korean is swear, flirt and negotiate price. Good skills all, but not helping in this situation!
