Chrome mirror covers peeling

So i know the best solution is to buy real WK Chrome or platnum mirrors but that is way out of my price range.

I found a matching set of the platinum overland mirrors on Ebay for $140 each, ive seen them in person and you cant really tell its not chrome. I cant find any OE Chrome mirrors off the 08+ any where and i am sure they are way too much $$ for a poor bastard like myself.

So for the last 2 years ive had chrome mirror covers. Each time after winter the chrome finish degrades. I had one set last year and it was a bear to take them off w/o doing major damage to the oe mirror.

I bought a different brand this time and again peeling, but this is by far the worst its been. Its only on my drivers side mirror for some reason but it looks terrible.

I am sure its directly related to buying cheap ebay ($40) covers but why is this happening?

I am going to remove these and give it one more try and break down and spend the $75 on PUTCO brand mirror covers, unless i end up rolling in cash suddenly and can afford the overland mirrors on ebay.

Is there anything that i can do for chromed plastic to stop this from happening again? Is it just the road salt? I dont use car washes.

my dad has a 2004 f-150 with chrome plastic mirror covers. same thing happens, and IMO u get what u pay for. i think you should sand down the stock mirrors like i did and paint to match. it would look great and be cheaper than buying the overland mirrors. it looks like u like the chromed out look but im just suggesting a more affordable idea before u spend $500 worth on plastic covers.

I guess then its because i bought cheap ebay covers and not putco covers, putco seems to be the major brand name in chrome stick on accessories.

I am totally about the chromed out look, i like all the stock chrome and mirrors. I dont even want chrome door handles, i dont want to over do it, the mirrors just look better chrome IMHO on my wk.

Are they turning a greenish color? I've seen that happen a lot on chromed plastic accessories. My wife's got some chromed plastic tailight "guards" on her WK that do that. I polish them out with a simple chrome polish by hand (elbow grease) until they are back to new and wax over top...that helps a lot, but I need to do it a few times per winter to keep up with it. If you let it go too long, you'll probably never get back to the original finish. I think it's purely road salt that does it. This only happens in the thick of the winter months.
