Disabling LED highlights on headlight assembly

I have a 2014 Summit and I would like to disable the white LED border on my headlight assemblies.

I have already disabled my DRLs, so that works fine for daytime use. However, what I want to accomplish is to turn those LEDs off even when the headlamps are on. I wouldn't mind snipping the power supply wires if necessary as long as it isn't an 8 hour job to access them (and it doesn't cause the canbus to freak out, or break the pivoting headlamps).

Disabling LED highlights on headlight assembly

So more expensive LEDS makes the car look cheap??? I can't follow the logic... Now if you say ... I don't like them... Or as someone else so eloquently put it... "They look gay"... Then I can understand ... It's a preference ...
I guess you could reference all
The cheap aftermarket wannabe headlights that have ruined the look ... But I would argue ... The oem led trim around the headlights look different and more distinguishable as an oem option. Nevertheless I guess it doesn't bother you guys that much since you decided to buy the Jgc version with those lights. To each his own ...

I would have willingly paid a few hundred dollars more not to have the gaudy LED highlights on my Summit (or a software feature to disable them at all times), but that wasn't an option.

I also bought the Jeep with the "Jeep" badging on it even though I didn't want that either; I guess I must not have been bothered by that very much because I didn't choose to buy a completely different vehicle. Oh wait, I popped the Jeep badging off the hood and the Summit badge off my liftgate the morning after I bought it.

Then I stripped off the lurid airbag warning stickers on my visors that I didn't want. After that, I physically destroyed the panic button switch on my keyfob's circuit board (ah, sweet relief). I'm planning to remove the Jeep's cellular datalink antenna that I never wanted, in order to disable the useless uConnect access features/security flaws/911 access/creepy tracking.

...and in this thread I am trying to ascertain the best way to disable the gaudy LED highlights at night.

Re: Disabling LED highlights on headlight assembly

I haven't looked at the GC lights, but I'm guessing they're very similar to the ones in my 300. On those, there's a circuit board inside the housing that drives the LED board. It has feeds for both DRL and parking lights, and the brightness depends on which is on. Cutting the parking light wire would disable them, but then I'd lose the parking lights too. The ground for the LED board does have its own pin on the connector though, so cutting that would work. It's not called out in the diagrams separately, so you would have to do some experimentation to figure out which it is, and if they're setup the same way.

Thanks for the background. I'm not averse to modifying a circuit board, but how difficult is it to access this board? Will it involve removing the headlight assembly and heating it to break the sealant?

Re: Disabling LED highlights on headlight assembly

I know theres a wire harness that plugs into each headlight... any electrical dudes care to look @ this diagram to see if its possible to maybe clip a wire?

Edit :
heres every wire for any FCA vehicle...also shows module locations.....maybe we can pull a fuse or a relay?

Interesting. Was that wiring diagram valid for both the 2014 and 2015 MY's? If so, I wonder if the DRL signal is simply activated along with the headlamps in order to cause the LED trim to activate. That is to say, what if the DRL signal is actually the LED trim highlight signal in practice?

If that's the case, then severing the white-gray wire might take care of it. I really doubt that those gaudy LEDs will have their own fuse... their power draw is negligible (just a few watts).

That's what I was saying. On the 300 (which has a very similar LED ring) the DRL lead and the parking light lead both go into the headlight housing and connect to a board inside. That board then drives the LED section. Killing the DRL lead will only kill the DRL function. If the parking light wire is live, the LEDs come on dimmed and it doesn't matter what the DRL wire is doing.

EDIT: Nevermind. It looks like it doesn't matter.

What do you guys have for parking lights?
