DIY Tail Tint

How hard is it to use VHT niteshades? I have clear coat already but had a few questions before I try this... What grit sandpaper to use? Anyone have tips or things to watch out for?

Re: DIY Tail Tint

I would use a very light sandpaper to remove the shininess, then wash them with soap and let them dry. Then do light coats till you get the desired tint you want. Then I would coat them to a high gloss and let them dry for a couple days. Then wet sand with like 2000 grit(if it has imperfections) and then buff to a high gloss. You may wanna get a body shop to clear them for a perfect finish.

Any idea what this may cost?

Re: DIY Tail Tint

I did the nightshades on a set of LEDs for my SRT, I wet sanded the lenses first, sprayed them, let them dry for 2 days, sprayed them with some high solids clear, let it dry for 2 days, wet sanded them again and buffed them they were smooth, glossy and looked great, total cost was 20.00. However be advised that nightshades fades, a year later, the dark tails are now light. I am going to replace them with a new set that I am going to have tinted locally.

They used to be dark, and this is what they look like now:

Re: DIY Tail Tint

How dark are you tinting them? (what percent) I'm debating about tint or the nightshade on my new LEDs

I want them fairly dark -- enough to knock out the red uite a bit but not so dark they look like its spray paint on there. 30% of red showing as a rough guess

Re: DIY Tail Tint

I've tinted all my vehicle lights (and friends) with VHT. It's REALLY easy to do, just takes some time to do it right. If you don't do it right, it'll turn out dull and look bad.

First wash the lights with Dawn dish soap to remove any wax and dirt. I always start off wetsanding with 1000 grit paper. I use this to remove any DOT, part, and mold markings. Then I wetsand with 1500 grit to get it all smooth.

Now wash it off with soap and water to remove any dirt or anything. Allow them to COMPETELY dry. Right before you go to spray VHT on them, use a tack cloth to get any lint off the lense. Spray the first coat of VHT and make it VERY light (the first coat is easiest to run/sag). On my first coat I can BARELY notice anything. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes and spray the next coat. Again, it's better to have lots light coats than get one too heavy and cause it to run/sag.

Once I get the final coat of VHT on, I let it dry for ~3-4 hours. Then I LIGHTLY wetsand with 1500 grit paper to remove any orange peel. This will cause the VHT to look cloudy but that's fine. Again, I wash the tails off with soap and water and allow to completely dry.

Next I start spraying with the clear coat. I usually do 5-6 coats of clear b/c I like plenty of paint to sand. Again, allow 10-15 minutes of dry time betweeen coats. Depending on who the tails are for, I will sand the clear after the final coat dries for 3-4 hours (I personally ALWAYS sand the clear on mine). Again, start wetsanding with 1500 grit to remove orange peel. Then move to 2000 grit to remove the 1500 grit scratches. Then I move to 2500 grit to remove the 2000 grit scratches. After this, everything should have a uniform haze over it. Then take a buffing compound and rub them out. This should turn everything nice and shiney.

If you're going to have a shop clear the tails, don't even worry about VHT. Instead, have the shop mix 80% clear and 20% black paint and spray it on the tails. This is basically what VHT is.

Re: DIY Tail Tint

Actually VHT is a deep red color, it will turn amber lenses orange and clear lenses pinkish when light is shined through them. It is easy to use, but it fades. As stated above if you think you cant get the finish right yourself, and plan on having them cleares anyway, just have the shop tint them, it most likely would cost the same to have them tinted or cleared as it the amount of work for the painter is the same.
