Well I have decided that I am going to do the DIY mesh grille. I am going to paint mine stone white to match the jeep instead of black.
I want to do both the grille and the lower opening. Im not sure yet how Im going to get the bottom done as I dont have the chrome insert but ill give it a try. Just going to pick up some Duplicolor stone white paint, primer and clear.
Awesome. i have an 05 WK and have a piece of mesh from Homedepot that would fit the lower opening perfect. They sell it in the gutter section, its the mesh gutter screening, cost less than 3 bucks for the piece too. I have it painted and ready to put on, but realized its more involved than I thought, meaning to make it secured properly I would be best off removing the whole bumper and doing it right. Its winter so im not about to half ass it, or take off my bumper in the cold. cant wait to see how yours comes out.
Hey Timmy, what are the measurements of that piece that will fit the bottom opening? I have tons of extra mesh and want to make one now and put it on later.
Will do. I will post a thread with pix when I do it. Like I said, to make it fit right I think the bumper needs to come off to secure it correctly and get the curves right.
Yeah, I did my grill this fall, and then cut the piece to do the lower lip, but then stopped when I realized that it all really needed to come off to fit correctly. I can't wait, and look forward to any pictures you may have, my main concern is correct removal, so I don't break anything. Good luck and thanks.
As far as breaking the fasteners im pretty sure if you go slow they will pop out with no problem. I read before that when removing the interior door panels to buy all new plastic clips cuz they break easy, but I have yet to break a plastic clip and have had all my door panels off more than 3 times each with speaker and soundproofing install. You should be fine, but if you happen to break a plastic fastener they sell them or something very similar at any local auto store.
well HD didnt have anything but the square mesh. I figured id try it. If i dont like it ill find a different mesh to put in there. Its out drying. I think the stone white inside of the chrome grille is going to look badass. we'll see though
Like I said before, that piece of mesh I used came from Homedepot in the roofing department, its a single piece of gutter mesh they sell. Im sure you can find it. Was less than 3 bucks for it.
the mesh that nate and i used is also sold at home depot and lowes. you have to look by the sheet metal, it's not by the gutter section. you will need 2 sheets
Yeah, I found my diamons stuff in the outdoors dept of HD, I think the guy called it chicken wire or sumpin, came in a hug sheet, it was almost obnoxious because i only needed a small pieace, it was like 8ftx6ft piece. Good Luck, the white looks good, I think you will be happier with the diamond mesh.
i found the diamond mesh that i decided to go with. I did however decide to paint it black instead of white. It doesnt look right with it actually on the truck.
Nice, glad you are happy with the diamond, do you have a pic of the white on the truck? I haven't cut the bottom piece yet, sorry man. I am excited to see how it turns out for ya.
no i dont have any pics of it on the truck. The mesh looked cheap and was too thin to even realize that it was white... it looked silver from a distance and honestly looked like shit. I thought about it too and I wanted to make it black to match the black in my wheels. If i white everything out and then have black in the wheels it would look different to me. Just my crazy way of thinking i guess. ill throw some pics up today of what it looks like
 okay so I just finished it! I love the black and the new mesh. I should have definitely looked around more before buying that square wire shit. The black is a lot more un-noticeable and thats what I like about it. People will have to know what they are looking at to notice that its different.
This time was alot easier of course as I was able to use the first cut out as a template. This new mesh is stronger and will hold up better. I used two coats of primer, two coats of black, and two coats of clear. If it ever gets chipped up ill just take it off and repaint. And i have a good chunk of left over mesh. it would only take an hour or two to make another. No biggie.
sorry, the light wasnt the best and im not sure if you can even see it.
just gotta get it on a lift, pull the bumper off and get the bottom done. I might save up for the chrome piece on the bottom though and do it all at once
