Dual CB Antennas

At first I was looking at getting dual 4' fiberglass antennas from radioshack but they only came in white and cost $35 each! I went on eBay and found a pair of identical ones in black for $24 shipped. They came in a couple weeks ago and I was deciding whether to spend $60 for 2 mounts that come out over the tail lights. Went to Home Depot and ended up finding a much better solution that I thought might be worth posting.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I bought 4 corner mount plate things, 2 larger and 2 smaller. I picked up some JB Weld, a 3/8 drill bit, 2 3/8 24 nuts, 6 screws, and a couple lock washers while I was there. I first drilled a 3/8 hole through the smaller plates.

The I used a level to find the angle at which to mount the smaller plates to the larger ones as the mounting spot beside the tail lights is not perfectly vertical. I marked the angles with a sharpie and used the JB Weld to put the plates together.

After sanding the plates down I used 2 coats of Etch Primer, 3 coats of black paint, and 2 layers of clear coat.

And I'm currently waiting for my drill to recharge so I can finish...damn thing dies after about 10 mins of use.

I marked the screw holes with sharpie and used a 1/8 drill bit to give the screws a place to start.

Right above them. There are other mounts like this sold online for Jeeps, I just don't want to shovel out $30 each for a couple little plates of metal.

Thanks

Toughest part at the moment is getting the JB Weld to stick well enough. I gave the plates a knock to make sure that the force of a big antenna going through the wind wouldn't cause it to come apart and sure enough they split. I'd kill for a welder right about now cause I'm not all that hopeful that the second attempt will be any different...

I got one on for a minute before the hammer test - should have taken a pic but it looks really good!

Waiting for the weld to harden overnight so I'll get back to this after school tomorrow.

Re: Dual CB Antennas

Got them mounted on today. The JB still isn't enough so I'm going to have to bring the plates into autotech at school to have them welded.

The left one's angle was just a bit off. Need to remeasure or it will bug the crap out of me.

Previews:

Re: Dual CB Antennas

Wow...I need to wash it! I almost did today but the cold deterred me - good thing cause now we're making plans to find an offroad park to go to this weekend.
